1 The Sixth Commandment Lesson 21

2 The Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery.
Love for God's gift of marriage and family

3 What does God want us to know?
Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

4 What does God want us to know?
Genesis 2:18, The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

5 What does God want us to know?
God created both man (male) and woman (female)

6 What does God want us to know?
God created male and female for marriage and mutual benefit Marriage = 1 man + 1 woman United for life!

7 What does God want us to know?
Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day. Genesis 2:25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

8 God’s Purpose for Marriage
1. “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him.” One purpose for marriage is loving companionship and helpfulness.

9 God’s Purpose for Marriage
1. “They will become one flesh.” A second purpose for marriage is a God-pleasing sexual union.

10 God’s Purpose for Marriage
1. “Be fruitful and increase in number.” A third purpose for marriage is to have children and to provide for them.

11 The Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery.
Don’t spoil God’s gift of sex and marriage. Spoken to both the married and the unmarried.

12 What don't we want to do? Ephesians 5:1-8 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2) and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3) But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4) Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6) Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7) Therefore do not be partners with them. 8) For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

13 What don't we want to do? Before Marriage Fornication =

Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Romans 1: Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25) They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. 26) Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27) In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
