8 Background Knowledge The VMFA is a very large part of the culture in Richmond, Virginia and has a lot to offer people of all different ages in the community. Most of the exhibits are free of charge to view and give good insight into the culture of that specific time period (Ancient Egypt and East Asian culture). There are also many other amazing exhibits that show all different aspects of art, like American art and Mid to late 20th Century, which focuses on a more modern aspect of art. There are all sorts of artifacts to view and many paintings, sculptures and even some furniture. There are also pop-up exhibits that have charge, but are related around a certain genre of art and change frequently. Going to this museum can be really beneficial to show the students how to appreciate art, culture, and to learn about history along the way.

9 Pre-trip: Activities: Have students view a picture of two of the main sculptures in the exhibit they will viewing and have them answer questions about the picture and short reading. Have students create a K.W.L. chart and fill out the Know and Want to know portion of the chart before the trip. Worlds-Egypt-and-China2.pdf

10 During Trip: Activity: Egyptomania Gallery Hunt! A hunt created by the VMFA that provides portions of pictures and clues as to what/ where each piece of art is. Once the students find this piece of art, they must write the correct answer down on the provided form. This will keep the students engaged and keep them learning while at the same time looking at all of the art. content/uploads/sites/23/2015/05/VMFA_Egyptomania_Gallery-Hunt_FINAL.pdf

11 Post-trip Activity: Have the students complete the rest of their K.W.L chart. Show the students two pictures of different art that they saw and have them tell you something that they remember about it. Ask the students to draw their favorite work of art and add as much detail as they can. Worlds-Egypt-and-China2.pdf
