1 International Psychopharmacology Algorithm Project (IPAP) generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) algorithm flowchart. Yellow, first-line treatment (nodes 3–6); green, second-line treatment (nodes 8–12); blue, third-line treatment, no comorbidity (nodes 13–16); orange, third-line treatment, with comorbidity (nodes 14–16); light green, assessment and evaluation. Levels of evidence used in development of the flowchart were: 1, more than one placebo-controlled trial with sample sizes over 30; 2, one placebo-controlled trial (or active vs. active drug comparison) with sample size of 30 or greater; 3, one or small (n <30) placebo-controlled trial; 4, case reports or open-label trials; and 5, expert consensus without published evidence.
