3 Poetry Metaphor A figure of speech meant to make a comparison between two (generally) unlike things. Simile An explicit comparison between two unlike things. Words often used are: as, like, seems or resembles. Metonymy A figure of speech in which one part is represented as the whole. In other words, sine aspect of an object or experience stands in for the whole experience or object. It is always a comparison between the whole and the part. Personification Applies human characteristics things, animals, abstract ideas etc.
