Read Genesis 1 and list what was created on each of the 6 days. Pay special attention to verse 26 and 31. What does it mean when God speaks in the plural (our) sense in verse 26? Bell-ringer September 11th, 2014
9
Nonfactual stories (like Genesis 1-11) can teach us about cultures and its values.
Early Genesis stories are about primeval history and ancestor stories (use lots of genealogies). Covenant Timeline Handout- notice God’s increasing family plan of salvation. Review
10
Discuss the general theological concepts of both creation stories in Genesis.
Learn how what truths about God are revealed in creation Know what term covenant means. Learning Targets
11
Creation Two creation accounts:
1. Gen 1-2:4 2. Gen 2:5-25 Main focus in 1st creation account is why God created the world. Important points to remember with 1st creation account God created the world in seven days. Each day He created something different. Creation
12
1st Creation Story: Theological Concepts
13
2nd Creation Story: Theological Concepts
Genesis 2:5-25 Key points Focus is creation of humanity Adam is created from the dirt (“Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”- Ash Wednesday) Eve created from Adam’s rib= theologically important because woman is created with equal dignity (rib is in middle of man’s body). 2nd Creation Story: Theological Concepts
14
Seven (see Handout 3B) Hebrew word means “to swear an oath”
In creating the world in 7 days God is swearing a covenant (see p. 63 for definition). The Sabbath rest is peak of creation Did God literally create in seven 24 hour days? Not necessarily, purpose of Genesis is religious not scientific. Tells us why not how the world was created. Seven (see Handout 3B)
15
Why do you think God’s revelation is gradual throughout history?
Think of your how your mom and dad slowly teach you about things (family history, life lessons, etc). Is it little by little or all at once? Why do this teach you this way? Why is it important for humans to rest and have at least one day (Sunday hopefully) devoted to rest? Class Discussion
16
Creation- Work of the Trinity
Genesis 1:26- “Let us make man in our image and likeness”- hints at conservation within the Trinity. Image of wind in Genesis 1:2 shows presence of Holy Spirit. St. John Cardinal Newman on angels and creation: “Every breath of air and ray of light and heat, every beautiful prospect, is, as it were, the skirts of their garments, the waving of the robes of those whose faces see God.”- example of theology not officially endorsed or rejected by Catholic Church. Creation- Work of the Trinity

Original Justice State humans were in before Genesis 3
Adam and Eve created in a state of grace= no original sin Effects of original justice No suffering/death Man at peace with himself Harmony between man/woman Harmony with rest of creation Original Justice
23
Original sin: first mark of sin all humans suffer from due to Adam/Eve’s sin against God.
Sin of pride= Man preferred himself over God (CCC 398). Serpent tempted Eve with partial truths (did not tell whole truth about God) Serpent later interpreted in Church history as a Fallen Angel- God’s highest creation (Lucifer). Original Sin

Saint of the Day- Our Lady of Sorrows!
Hallowed Mother, do this favor: Those Wounds that gored my Savior, deeply on my heart engraved. Mine it be, Christ's throes in sharing. Mine it be, his anguish bearing. These, his wounds, to keep in mind. From the flame of hell unending, be thou, Virgin, me defending, in that dreadful reckoning day! When in death my eyes are closing, open them, Lord, to see reposing, Victory's crown in Mary's hand. When my frame by death is broken, and my doom by thee is spoken, be it, Lord, the better land. Amen. I beseech you, O Lord Jesus Christ, that the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose most holy soul was pierced in the hour of your Passion by the sword of sorrow, may intercede for us with Your mercy now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Saint of the Day- Our Lady of Sorrows!

31
The First Gospel- Genesis 3:15
Sometimes known as the “proto-evangelium”. Early foreshadowing of Jesus (seed of the woman). Jesus calls Mary “woman” at Wedding at Cana in John 2:4 Same Hebrew word “woman” is used in Genesis 3:14. Mary as a fulfillment of this Genesis passage She is the NEW EVE! Revelation 12 also discusses Mary battling the serpent (now a full dragon). The First Gospel- Genesis 3:15
32
Example of how Sacred Art Teaches
33
Mary- Undoer of Knots Pope Francis’ favorite Marian title.
Mary’s silent obedience undoes Eve’s talkative disobedience (see Gen 3). Eve listened to a serpent (Fallen angel) and Mary listened to Gabriel (a good angel). Recall how Jesus is the New Adam. Mary- Undoer of Knots
34
Cain and Abel
35
Difference in Sacrifices
Abel Cain Hebrew word for “Abel” means “vapor”- Abel had a quick life (vapor dissolves quickly Sacrificed the BEST lamb of flock. Innocent victim like Jesus Hebrew word for “Cain” means “spear” Some traditions view Cain as not sacrificing his best to God. Possible reason for God’s anger is Cain loved himself more than God Difference in Sacrifices
36
Excerpt from Eucharistic Prayer I
Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the just, the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith, and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim. Excerpt from Eucharistic Prayer I
