3 Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
Psychological problems in which there are symptoms of a physical disorder w/o a physical cause Not faking it “malingering” – consciously faking an illness for some concrete benefit (not a somatic symptom disorder)

4 Factitious Disorders Factitious Disorder Imposed on Self & Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (AKA - Munchausen Syndrome & Munchausen By-Proxy ) a disorder in which someone deceives others by appearing sick, by purposely getting sick, or by self-injury Might report false symptoms, manipulate laboratory tests, falsify medical records, ingest a substance, or cause physical injury Requires absence of obvious rewards (not a form of malingering) Prevalence unknown due to deception – estimated at about 1% of patients in hospital settings

5 Conversion Disorder (Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder) (formerly called “hysteria”)
Person displays blindness, deafness, paralysis, insensitivity to pain or other sensory/motor failure w/o a physical cause Generally show little/no concern Rare (only 2% of diagnoses) Most common in adolescence & early adulthood

6 Hypochondriasis Strong, unjustified fear of having physical illness
Believe minor symptoms = serious ailments (i.e. headache = brain tumor) Believe despite MD reassurance **Eliminated in DSM-5** (in part because term was considered pejorative and not conducive to an effective therapeutic relationship) - Most would now receive a diagnosis of Somatic Symptom Disorder or Illness Anxiety Disorder in DSM-5
