1 On Target? Do this on your Warm Up worksheet!
PLEASE put today’s date (3/21/17) in the TUESDAY box of your warm up! What is ocean acidification?

2 For today Warmup Ocean Acidification Balancing chemical equations
Objective: I can explain how carbon moves between water and the atmosphere by observing and discussing this process.

3 OCEAN ACIDIFICATION Ocean water absorbs CO2 and increases the acidity.
WHAT PROBLEMS COULD THIS CAUSE?

4

5 Add the CO2 absorption and outgassing to your diagram

6 Add the CO2 absorption and outgassing to your diagram

7 WHAT IS THE CHEMISTRY FOR THE CHANGING pH?
What is an ion? Acids have more H+ ions in solution!

8 Step #1: Every day, the ocean absorbs nearly a third of the carbon dioxide we put into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, driving cars, and clearing forests. Step #2: When carbon dioxide dissolves into seawater it forms carbonic acid, and lowers the pH of seawater, making it more acidic. Carbon dioxide (CO2) + water (H2O) carbonic acid  Hydrogen ions (H+) + bicarbonate ions (HCO31-) Step #3: Rising acidity depletes seawater of carbonate ions, an essential ingredient used by creatures like shellfish and corals to build their shells. Hydrogen ions (H+) + carbonate ions (CO32-)  bicarbonate ions (HCO31-)

9 Chemical equations CO2 + H2O  H2CO3
Carbon Dioxide + water  Carbonic acid Is this equation balanced or unbalanced? BALANCED!  CO2 + H2O  H+ + HCO3 -1 What is different about this equation? IONS!

10 Balance in your lab notebook!
a. __ HgO  __Hg + __O2 _2 HgO  2 Hg + 1 O2 b. __ Fe + __ O2  __ Fe2O3 _4 Fe + _3 O2  Fe2O3

11 ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER: Balance the following chemical equations!
__ KClO3  __ KCl + __ O2 _2 KClO3  _2 KCl + _3 O2 __ Ca(OH)2 + __ H2SO4  __HOH + __ CaSO4 _1 Ca(OH)2 + _1 H2SO4  _2 HOH + _1 CaSO4 __ Cu + __ AgNO3  __ Cu(NO3)2 + __ Ag _1 Cu + _2 AgNO3  _1 Cu(NO3)2 + _2 Ag __ C2H6 + __O2  __ CO2 + __H2O _2 C2H6 + _7 O2  _4 CO2 + _6 H2O
