1 Welcome to our Mothering Sunday celebration!

2 Mother’s Day Started in the USA in 1914 following a campaign instigated by Anna Jarvis after the death of her own mother. Anna came to despise the commercialisation of the day!

3 Mothering Sunday Inspired by the liturgy of pre-reformation church in England when people returned to their mother church or cathedral. People working away from their families, such as domestic servants, were given the day off to visit their families as well as their home church. They would pick flowers from the verges to take home to give to their mothers. Constance Smith revived ‘Mothering Sunday’ in the Church of England after reading about Anna Jarvis’s campaign in the USA. Her book ‘The revival of Mothering Sunday’ was published in 1920 and by 1938 ‘Mothering Sunday’ was celebrated across denominations all over the UK.
