3 What is the IEEE WP section template?
The IEEE WordPress Section Template is a pre-configured set of plugins and pages that serve as a great starting point for your website. This tutorial will explain the basic functionality of and how to use the plugins that have been provided for you.

4 Overview of the IEEE template
IEEE staff have pre-configured some plugins and widgets to ease the burden of creating a layout from scratch. Configuration and an explanation of how to fully customize the template will be explained throughout this tutorial Custom Menu Custom Menus Easing Slider Lite (slideshow) plugin All-In-One Calendar Widget There are 2 plugins that contribute to this content area. Posts-in-Page to display Pages in the Page and AutoBlog to generate the Pages from a feed.

6 Usage of the Posts-In-Page plugin
The shortcode [ic_add_posts] can be placed in any Page to display Posts. The Post settings dictate which posts are shown.

7 Auto Blog (auto-generate Posts from feed)
Feed URLs can be found at vTools.Meetings (explained next slide) Set to post Hovering your mouse over the blue symbol will bring up the input field’s description. Additional options on this Page will help to specify how the Pages are generated from the feed.

8 vTools.Meetings (logging in)
Go to <meetings.vtools.ieee.org/main> Click “Login” to open up the authentication window. Enter your IEEE web account credentials and click “Log In”.

9 vTools.Meetings (finding .ical feed)
Click to view feeds that are available to you Copy the link address from the desired .ical feed

10 Events (Calendar Plugin)
The Events settings tab is created by the All-in-One Event Calendar plugin which we have pre-installed for you. It accepts feeds (.ics) from vTools meetings and will update automatically. You can also add events directly into the tool.

11 Adding an Event (Calendar Plugin)
Event categories help to search for specific events and are sortable Checking repeat will bring up a menu that will allow you to specify the nature of the repetition These tabs open up more forms that you should fill out to give the details of your event Event description goes here.

12 Placing the Calendar on a Page
The shortcode [ai1ec view="monthly"] can be placed in any Post or Page. “monthly” can be changed to weekly,daily etc… to give a different default view. Users can change their view on the calendar itself. For a list of shortcodes visit the FAQ at <

13 Placing the calendar in the sidebar
Sidebars on IEEE themes are displayed on all Pages You can drag & drop this widget into any part of the sidebar

15 Calendar View View only a specific event category. (set during event creation). Choose the calendar view (Month,Week,Day,Posterboard) The blue bars represent all day events.

17 Contact Form 7 (plugin) This is the name of the plugin
This is the name of the form Clicking on one of the generated tags will bring up a menu to customize that tags settings These are the default contact form settings. More information about the generate tag options can be found at < The ordering determines the order in which the contact form fields are displayed. Change the default address to where you want the contact s to be sent Shortcode that can be copied into the form

18 Inserting the Contact form
If you would like to place the contact form on another place on your site, you may place the shortcode generated by the plugin in a Post, Page, or text widget. Copy the shortcode from the Contact form main Page (accessed by clicking ‘Contact’ on the Dashboard) to any Page to display the form. End Result

19 Easing Slider Lite (slideshow plugin)
The Easing Slider Lite plugin will automatically cycle through images you provide in the tool.

Images can be added through the Media Tool Use the shortcode [easingsliderlite] to place the image slider in the Page of your choosing. To change the way the slideshow looks and performs, edit the options in these expandable menus

21 Gallery (NextGEN gallery plugin)
The gallery plugin provides ways of uploading and managing multiple images. It includes features such as thumbnail management, password protection, albums, and watermarks. A video tutorial for the plugin can be viewed at < A list of shortcodes can be viewed at <

22 AdRotate (plugin) The AdRotate plugin provides a means to display and track the performance of your advertisements. It can be used to display your section’s supporters and can be placed anywhere on the site. Click to add a new advertisement (continued next slide)

23 Creating an advertisement
HTML to display the image. If you wish to show an image and have it link to an external website this is the tag to use. --- <a href=“insert-destination-URL-here”> <img src=“image-url-ending-in-file-extension”/></a> Swap out the text between the quotes with the link and image source URLs. Shortcode for ad. The number is also the id.

24 AdRotate Widget Can be: Single Ad Group of Ads Block of Ads --
Groups & Blocks are for multiple ads under one title. Block – Dimension dependent. Margins and padding play a role. Groups – single adds placed together consecutively Id is given to you during ad creation

25 SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
SEO is the process of improving a websites visibility from search engine Results. Some important aspects of SEO include: Keywords (titles, content, URLs, and image names) Linking to archives Sitemap (the fewer clicks to navigate around your site, the better) Search-friendly URLs Image descriptions (ALT tag keywords) Updated content Social media distribution For an in-depth tutorial written by the creator of the WP SEO plugin visit < Continued next slide

26 Improving SEO This form (WordPress SEO by Yoast) can be found on most areas where content can be added. Content generated meta description (gray text). To override: add the desired description to the Meta Description field. Pick a Keyword that is a general topic of what the Page is about The more ‘Yes’ the better

27 Documents (WP Document Revisions plugin)
WP Document Revisions is three things: A document management system (DMS), to track, store, and organize files of any format A collaboration tool to empower teams to collaboratively draft, edit, and refine documents A file hosting solution to publish and securely deliver files to a team, to clients, or to the public A video overview of the plugin can be viewed at < Continued next slide

28 Documents (uploading)
Edit the document’s visibility status. options include: Public Private Password protected Opens the file uploader Workflow states are used to track the progress of a document Sets a user as the primary document owner

29 Documents (workflow states)
Workflow states are used to help describe the status of a document to anyone who has the user privileges to view them.
