EOG Math Strategies Race to the Finish!
Cathy Barlow - Hudson Middle School Sharon Norman – Leland Middle School
2
Some important things for you to know about the Math EOGs…
3
The math EOGs were brand new two years ago the questions are HARDER the passing grade is HIGHER!
4
What does that mean to us?
The state has made the EOGs more challenging… We have to work harder to be prepared… What worked before may not work now…
5
Not only do you need to work HARDER,
BUT you also need to work SMARTER! Let’s look at some STRATEGIES that will help you “work smarter”…
6
Come to school EVERYDAY during EOGs!
May May May 26 27 28
7
Get a good night’s sleep before the EOGs!
8
Eat a good breakfast before the EOGs!
9
Remember, work slowly and carefully on the tests!
“I tried my very best!”
10
Try your hardest on EVERY problem – don’t give up!
I’ll just fill in any circle – I’ll just fail anyway!”
11
If you can narrow it down to two good choices – choose the best of the two!
“Well, I know it’s either A or C, but I think C is better so I’ll mark C!”
12
Let’s practice and learn some tips for success…
13
1.) A class is conducting a probability experiment using the spinner shown. The table shows the results of spinning the spinner 200 times. What is the experimental probability that the spinner will land on blue on the next spin? Spinner Results Blue 76 Red 27 Green 52 Yellow 45 R R Y B Y B B G 1 4 19 50 3 8 37 100 A. B. C. D.
14
Math vocabulary is very important!
Do you know what the words experimental probability mean?
15
The Answer is A) 19/50 Math vocabulary is very important! Try to really think about the meaning of the math words!
16
2.) Simplify: ÷ (9 – 8) 32 A B. 648 C. 576 D. 0
17
ALWAYS use Order of Operations!
1.) Parenthesis (and other grouping symbols) 2.) Exponents 3.) Multiplication or division, left to right 4.) Addition or subtractrion, left to right
18
The answer is C) 576 Remember order of operations - “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.”
19
3. ) A bag contains 6 pink, 8 white, 4 green, and 2 blue ribbons
3.) A bag contains 6 pink, 8 white, 4 green, and 2 blue ribbons. Jasmine picks ribbons out of her bag at random. She picked one ribbon out of the bag, put it aside, and then picked out a second ribbon. What is the probability that the first ribbon is white and the second is blue? A. 1/25 C. 4/25 B. 4/95 D. 1/4
20
It does not look like the answer is here, BUT…. It is!
Sometimes they make the answers very tricky! It does not look like the answer is here, BUT…. It is! Here’s a hint: Always look for answers that may be simplified or written in another “form”!
21
The answer is B) 4/95 Don’t let them trick you!
Always look for answers that may be simplified or written in another “form”!
22
4.) What is the value of 253? A. 565 B. 15,625 C. 5,165 D. 75
23
DON’T FALL for common mistakes!
WRONG answers that students often pick are usually included in the answer choices. Think before you choose!
24
The answer is B) 15,625 Remember, common wrong answers are often included as choices – take your time and think before you write!!!!
25
5.) What is 7/8 written as a percent and as a decimal number?
26
Think carefully about the meaning
of math symbols… HINT: A fraction bar has a special meaning in math!
27
The answer is C) 87.5%, Pay special attention to math symbols on the EOG! Think about their meaning!!!
28
6.) Which list shows the numbers in
order from greatest to least? A. 2, 5/9, , 67% B. 0, %, 3/4, 4.2 C. 99%, 10, 8/9, D. 1, 2/5, , %
29
Read carefully to see what the question asks for: greatest to least OR
least to greatest ! Remember: Numbers are easiest to compare when they are written in the same form! ALL negatives are less than ALL positives! Whole numbers are greater than fractions!
30
The answer is D) 1, 2/5, , % To compare numbers, change them to the same form – usually decimals! Be sure you know WHAT the question is asking for!!
31
4 7.) Evaluate: 9 A. 13 B C. 176 D. 36
32
If you are unsure of a math symbol – try looking on your calculator!
Many math symbols are on the calculator!
33
The answer is B) 6561 Remember, your calculator is a tool so if you are confused: Look for keys on the calculator that might help you!
34
A. 35 feet B. 20 feet C. 13.2 feet D. 52.48 feet
8.) A carpenter built a gazebo with a floor in the shape of an octagon. If each side of the octagon measures 2 ½ feet, what is the perimeter of the gazebo floor? A. 35 feet B. 20 feet C feet D feet
35
Remember, you want to work “smarter” - NOT “harder”!
Always ESTIMATE before you work the problem… Hmm… This helps you ELIMINATE choices AND helps you know if your answer is REASONABLE!
36
The answer is B 20 feet ESTIMATING before you work a problem helps you eliminate choices and determine if your answer is REASONABLE!
37
9.) What is written in standard form? A. 2,350 B C D. 2,350,000
38
You can think… If a question seems confusing think about
it in small parts first! You can think… 1.) Do I know what 10-4 means? If so, use the calculator to find the answer! 2.) Then look at the rest of the problem…. Do I know what the dot means between the numbers? If so use the calculator….
39
The answer is C) 0.000235 Remember, if you are confused –
start somewhere! See if you can begin with a small part of the problem first!
40
10. ) What number is represented on the mat shown below
10.) What number is represented on the mat shown below? The shaded counters represent negative numbers and the white counters represent positive numbers. A. 18 B. 12 -6 D. -12
41
Try to create some “visual tricks” to help you remember what to do for some problems…
When you see two-colored counters, think of one negative and one positive going together to make a “zero sandwich”!
42
The answer is C) -6 “Visual tricks” can sometimes help you remember what to do! Try to create some of your own “visual” tricks.
43
11. Which statement is true?
B. - 2/3 > - 1/3 C < D. – ½ < - 0.2
44
Negative numbers can be very confusing – don’t JUMP at an answer – THINK before you write – DRAW a number line! 1 2 3 4 -1 -2 -3 -4 Remember that numbers get smaller as you go left on the number line!
45
The answer is D) – ½ < - 0.2
Don’t JUMP at an answer – THINK before you write!
46
12. Susan bought fencing for a rectangular garden that measures 12 feet by 10 feet. After she bought the fencing, she decided to increase the dimensions of the garden to 18 by 12 feet. If she wants to install fencing around the new garden, how much more fencing does she need? 8 feet B feet C. 96 feet D feet
47
Start drawing and labeling the gardens…
Sometimes, if you do not understand a problem, drawing a picture of what is happening will help! Start drawing and labeling the gardens… 12 ft 10 ft 18 ft
48
The answer is B) 16 feet If you are confused about a problem, try to draw a picture! This will often help you understand the problem.
49
13. Trevor had a board that was 6. 1 feet long
13. Trevor had a board that was 6.1 feet long. He cut the board into two pieces. One of the pieces is 3.9 feet long. About how long is the other piece? A. 2 feet B. 8 feet C feet D feet
50
The word about in this problem means that you do not need to have an exact answer!
Use the information that is given to make a reasonable estimate…
51
The answer is A) 2 feet Remember that “about” does NOT mean you need an exact answer! You may not have to work the problem out, BUT it’s always GOOD to check!!!!
52
14. Raleigh-Durham airport had about 6
14. Raleigh-Durham airport had about 6.4 x 105 passengers in November of In December 2002, they had about 6.8 x 105 passengers. How many passengers traveled through the airport in November and December? A. 132,000 people B. 40,000 people C. 400,000 people D. 1,320,000 people
53
Remember to use your calculator as a TOOL!
Doing “several operations at one time” is easy on most calculators because they will automatically do order of operations. Use as many calculator functions as you can!
54
The answer is: D) 1,320,000 people
If the exponent is positive move it to the right JUST LIKE on the number line! If it is negative move it to left JUST LIKE on the number line! 3.08 x = ? 3.08 x = ?
55
15. On a trip to the Ashboro zoo, 5 friends wanted to sit together on the bus, but there were only 3 adjacent seats. In how many ways could 3 of the 5 friends sit together? A. 6 B. 15 C. 60 D. 120
56
Think carefully about VOCABULARY- permutation or combination?
If you change the order and it does not make a different arrangement or change the item, then it is a combination! Example: 5c3 If you change the order and it makes a different arrangement, then it is a permutation! Example: 5P3
57
The answer is C) 60 A PERMUTATION is where order is important because if you change the order you get a different group or arrangement! M S H
58
If the circumference of a circle is 40 meters,
what is the radius of the circle? A. 5 meters B. 20 meters C. 10 meters D. 60 meters
59
Study your formulas! C = d
What information do you know by “thinking” about this formula and the problem that was given?
60
The answer is B) 20 meters A FORMULA can help you find all kinds of “missing” information!
61
17. Which of the following numbers, when multiplied by 2/3, results in a number greater than 2/3?
62
They are trying to find 2/3 “of” another number!
Think about what you know is true about fractions. … They are trying to find 2/3 “of” another number!
63
The answer is D) 3/2 When multiplying by a fraction, you are finding “part of” another number!
64
18. What is the value of 5 + 2x – (y)2 if x = 12 and y = 3?
B. 20 C. 26 D. 75
65
Is this an equation or an expression?
You do not need to “solve” an equation…. just substitute and evaluate the expression!
66
The answer is B) 20 SUBSTITUTE the values given for x and y and then EVALUATE the expression!
67
19. If WXYZ is rotated 90 counterclockwise about the origin, in what quadrant will the image of W lie? A. I W X B. II Z Y C. III D. IV
68
Another word for “rotate” is TURN!
“About the origin” means around (0,0) on the coordinate grid… staying the same distance from that point! 90 means the new “image” will form a right angle with the first figure.
69
The answer is C) quadrant III
Quadrants are numbered from the top right side and go COUNTERCLOCKWISE!!!
70
20. If 2 fair coins are tossed, the sample space is {HH, HT, TH, TT} where H represents heads and T represents tails. What is the probability of getting 2 heads? D. 1
71
Sample space is a list of all of the possible outcomes!
72
The sample space is a list of all of the possible outcomes!
The answer is A) ¼ The sample space is a list of all of the possible outcomes!
73
What property is shown by
6(5x + 4) = (6 x 5x) + (6 X 4) A. Commutative Property of Addition B. Associative Property of Multiplication C. Distributive Property D. Multiplication Property
74
Think about each of the properties…
Commutative Property Associative Property Distributive property
75
C) Distributive Property
The answer is C) Distributive Property Commutative – Change the order Associative – Change the grouping Distributive – Multiply what’s outside the parentheses by both things inside of the parentheses
76
