1 Report Writing

2 Hockey Alberta Expectations
That all officials complete a game report when required Game reports have enough information for Zone and League Discipline Coordinators to make decisions Officials are confident in how to write a game report even if a form is not available

3 When Do I Need to Write a Game Report?
Anytime there is a: Game Misconduct; Gross Misconduct; Match Penalty; OR 10 Minute Misconduct with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game

4 When Do I Need to Write a Game Report?
Examples: Checking from Behind  2 min Minor + Game Misconduct Game Misconduct for Verbal Abuse 10 Minute Misconduct to player for abusive language with 5:40 remaining the 3rd period Major Penalty for Tripping (player was injured resulting in automatic major penalty) Gross Misconduct for using a Racial Slur Match Penalty for Kicking

League and Hockey Alberta officials need to know what happened on the ice The information provided helps determine suspensions, if any Ensures the correct players or team officials are suspended Means we don’t have to call you to find out what happened Hockey Canada rules tell us to do it (“Provide the details to the President”)

7 Before Writing the Report
Things to do before writing the report… Check it! FILL IN CHECK THESE

8 Before Writing the Report
Make sure the gamesheet is filled out correctly Penalties are correct (Checking from Behind instead of Cross Checking Times for Penalties are correct (Timekeepers sometimes write the wrong time – 2 minutes instead of 5 minutes) Make sure the correct player number is listed (we want to make sure the write player is serving the penalty)

Make sure the gamesheet is filled out correctly The penalties are listed on separate lines Major penalty for Slashing should be written on the game sheet as Note that a different player serves the major penalty as #5 is ejected Period Player Serve Infraction Min Off 2 5 12 Slashing 12:10 Game Misc. 10

10 Writing a Game Report Some leagues will have a Game Report for You to fill out Some leagues require you to write a Game Report on the back of the Game Sheet

11 Writing a Game Report Game Report is Provided DO NOT FILL IN

12 Writing a Game Report If the Game Report is Provided…
Fill it in (you don’t have to fill in your phone #) Remember to get the correct team, player/coach name, player number Copy the time, period and penalty from the game sheet Quote the right rule number for the infraction Describe what happened

13 Writing a Game Report If NO Game Report is Provided…
Write on the back of the Gamesheet Include the same information you would normally see on the form: Period, Time of Incident, Player/Coach Name, Player Number Hockey Canada Rule # Penalty including number of minutes Description of what happened

Period 12:23. Calgary Raiders #84 Hackem Slashem was assessed 2 minute Minor and a Game Misconduct for Checking From Behind #84 checked #33 on St. Albert from behind at center ice. The check was not violent and the St Albert player was not hurt. Rule 6.4(a) Per No Serv Offence Min Off Start On 2 84 12 Check From Behind 12:23 10:23 Game Misconduct

Period 11:05. Fort Mac Blades #12 Hugh Dunnit was assessed 5 minute Major and a Game Misconduct for Slashing #12 checked #2 on Taber across the arm. The slash caused injury to #2 and a major penalty was assessed. Rule 8.3(b) Per No Serv Offence Min Off Start On 1 12 18 Slashing 5 11:05 6:05 Game Misconduct 10

Period 7:00. Edson Volcanoes Assistant Coach Blown Top was assessed a Game Misconduct for verbally abusing an official The Assistant Coach was originally assessed a Bench Minor for disputing calls at 8:58 of the third period. A powerplay goal was scored against his team and he started to swear at me after we skated by the bench to report the goal. Coach was ejected and left the bench without further incident. Rule 9.2(a) Per No Serv Offence Min Off Start On 3 8 Bench Minor* 2 8:58 7:00 Game Misconduct* 10 

20 Game Reports – Things To Remember
Describe what happened so that someone who wasn’t at the game can understand what happened NEVER comment on suspensions. You can tell coaches/managers to check with their league coordinator or zone discipline coordinator who handles suspensions Stick to the facts of what you saw and what was said Make sure you get the right rule numbers (your partner/linesmen should help you with this) Sign the Game Report
