2 Why Smart Grid ? Increased Reliability of Power Networks
Avoid blackouts/brownouts Faster rerouting, reclosing Learn about problems faster Avoid uncontrolled load shedding Integrate Renewable Energy Avoid distributed energy generators – wind, solar, micro & gensets Increase Energy Efficiency Energy saving Variable-speed drives Price-driven demand response Enable future apps – eV, V2G Smart grid has been a widely discussed topic in recent years; besides reason of reducing carbon dioxide, two major factors come from below two parts: Reliability Part: A chain of blackout occurred at 16:15pm Aug. 14, 2003  affected 10M people in Canada and 50M people in Northeast USA, and resulted in 25~30 billion loss Efficiency part: able to manage efficiency of energy generation and usage, which is impossible in the past Precise for instant price Transparent information

3 Enabling the Smart Grid
Self-healing System Renewable Energy Integration Electricity Market Demand / Response Smart Substation When we talk about smart grid, we can ignore heart of energy, and that is smart substation. All section (generation / transmission / distribution…) connect to smart substation, and with smart substation, many new functions can be executed, such as self-healing, demand/response, instant price…and son on. Micro Grid Management Instant Price

4 Global T&D Market Trends & Potential
1. Challenges and Trends of Global T & D - Global T & D Infrastructure is aging after World War II (ex. Over 75% US asset are more than 25 years old) - Emerging Country’s Urbanization boosting electricity demands (ex. 350 million population will be added to China urban by 2025) - Traditional T & D systems will migrate to meet Digitization technology (Substation automation requirement, ex. IEC61850) - Renewable Energy(DER) are installed for power generation (ex. wind energy take 20% share of US electricity by 2030, EU 20% by 2020) 2. Global Market Potential - 1.5 ~ 2.0 Trillion USD investment at US T & D by 2030 - China’s Electricity Consumption will exceed US by 2030 - China: 58% T & D Growth Y2007 – Y2012 - U.S. : 33% T & D Growth Y2007 – Y2012 - EU : 25% T & D Growth Y2007 – Y2012 - India: 133% T & D Growth Y2007 – Y2012 As we all know, Transmission and Distribution is a fast growth market…no matter in US, EU, and emerging countries such as China and India.

8 IEC 61850-3 Standard Overview
IEC is a Breakthrough for Substation Automation One world, One technology, One Standard It defines communication protocols in a modern substation. IEC defines the general requirements : Ref. Function IEC Normal (req. of CE/FCC) IEC ESD Contact : 8KV Air :15KV Contact : 4KV Air :8KV IEC RS 35 V/m 10 V/m IEC EFT 4KV 2KV IEC Surge 0.5KV If we simply divided IEC into H/W and S/W. IEC standard is related to H/W side. From the chart, you may easily see the requirement differences between IEC and normal industrial PC From sub-regulation IEC61000, ESD/RS/EFT/Surge requirements are much stricter than normal IPC requirements For example: ESD: 8KV VS 4KV (contact) and 15KV VS 8KV (Air) EFT: 4KV VS 2KV Surge: 5KV VS 0.5KV

9 IRIG-B Function Overview
IRIG, Inter-range instrumentation group time codes Interfaces usually used : Fiber optics Coaxial lines (TTL) RS-485 (Differential) Auto-mode : While the regular IRIG-B source is down, 1st tier devices can be backed up to provide the internal time source. For power application, time syn. function is important, and normally time syn. Spec. in substation application is IRIG-B Interfaces for IRIG-B could be fiber / coaxial / or RS-485  Advantech also has a module to support all these interfaces.
