1 Evangelism: City Work

2 Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-10)
- There was conflict (persecution) - The work was rapid (not mature believers, but maturing believers) - Paul was creative (written ministry) How can we be creative to reach cities for Christ?

3 Athens (Acts 17:16-34) - Paul is an opportunist to meet people in the marketplace (v. 17) Unique approach by which Paul: - Connected with their culture (v. 23) - Began with God (v ): Power, Infinity, Transcendence, Sovereignty - Quoted their poets (v. 28) - Didn’t use the Bible

4 Evangelism Content - There is no one way to evangelize
Why? Everyone is at a different spot in their journey, and needs to hear different aspects of the truth - A comprehensive knowledge of the whole truth is helpful 1) Pre-Gospel 2) Need 3) Provision

5 Pre-Gospel Hebrews 11:6 “Whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists” Six broad areas of evidences: - First cause (who caused everything) - Design (why do things appear designed?) - Morality (where do we get moral laws?) - Purpose/Meaning (does life have this? - Miracles (especially the resurrection) - Personal experience of God/Testimony

6 Need Acts 20:21 “Testifying … of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord” A number of ways to demonstrate: - Scripture verses (Romans 1-3) - Conscience (Romans 2: the law in the heart) - Commandments (1Timothy 1:9 - the written law) - Christ (Romans 3:23 - honest people discover sinfulness by trying to be holy)

7 Corinth (Acts 18:1-18) - Paul started with one couple
(the value of one person) - The basic message was simple: Christ crucified (1Corinthians 2:2)

8 Provision Acts 20:21 “Testifying … of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord” A number of important Gospel themes/illustrations: - Grace (Hebrews 13:9 - “it is good for the heart to be strengthed by grace”) - Bridge analogy - Connection to Christ analogy - 2 Roads analogy (Matthew 7:13-14) - Other books/study courses

9 Ephesus (Acts 19:1-20) - Key words are: “Reasoned/argued” (19:8-9)
See also 17:2 (Thessalonica); 18:4 (Corinth) “Persuaded” (19:9) See also 17:4 (Thessalonica); 18:4,13 (Corinth) An appeal of truth to the mind, patiently convincing people - He stayed there 3 years (patient stickability)
