1 Hello and welcome to today’s training.
I hope you learn a lot. Acknowledgement of country

2 Making change Today we will be talking about making changes.
You will be hearing from me, talking to each other, writing and drawing and watching videos. You will also have a chance to practice what you learn about.

3 Write down what you learn
You can write down the things we talk about. That way you will remember what you learn.

4 What should I know after this training?
You should know about what happens when you make changes the process of change how to work with people who do not want to change finding ways of moving towards the future you want All of us start any new learning experience with things we hope find out. We have our own goals. It would be great if you could leave this training knowing about what happens when you make changes the process of change how to work with resistance to change finding strategies for moving towards the future you want. Now, let’s get started.

5 Getting to know you My name is… I come from…
I want to be a leader because… Let’s get to know each other better. If there is enough time. Get people to say these things to the group. If not, they could say them to the person next to them.

6 Making changes in my own life
Everything is changing and we need to be able to manage these changes. We need strategies and skills. You will have already experienced lots of changes.

7 I am not sure about change
How do I feel about change? change I love I hate change I am scared of change I think change is fun I am not sure about change How do you feel about change? Read slide – words inside balls Give handout 1 Write or draw how you feel now about change on handout 1. There are no wrong answers! Discuss

8 What lots of people say about change
Change can be hard Change can feel exciting I do not like it Change effects everyone in different ways. Lots of people say Change can be very hard Making changes can feel challenging. We are used to working and acting in a particular way. We like the things we know. Any disruption to what we know can feel uncomfortable. Change sometimes feels exciting You may have heard the saying “a change is as good as a holiday”. What this means is that sometimes doing something new and different in our lives can be exciting and give us new energy. I do not like it Many of us like things to be just the same. It is not surprising that so many people do not like change. Continues on the next slide…

9 What lots of people say about change
Change makes me feel uncomfortable I cannot stop change Change gives me a chance to do something good People also say Change makes me feel uncomfortable When we get used to doing things 1 way, and then we are asked to try something else it can feel uncomfortable. We may not have the skills to do what we are being asked. We may not know who we can get support from. We may feel awkward. Learning anything new is scary as we have not yet developed ways of doing it. I cannot seem to stop all the changes going on around me There is so much change going on all the time. Things like: technology, regulations, the people in your life, children growing up, government changes. Changes are happening around me and it all seems to be happening so fast. Change gives me a chance to do something good Change in my life can be great for me and for others Feel free to add any of these ideas to your notes on handout 1. Does anyone want to comment about how they feel about change?

10 What changes have happened to you?
How we feel about changed can be influenced by lots of things. Change can be unexpected, sudden, unsettling Change can also be welcome. planned. We are likely to feel different about changes that are welcome to ones that are unexpected. One change that we all experience is that we all get older. Think about some other changes. Can anyone think of a change that may be unwelcome? (like a friend is moving a long way away or a more expensive bill) Get people to share their ideas -Scribe up ideas Can anyone think about some changes that could be welcome? (like a holiday) Scribe up ideas

11 Change checklist Tick any change that you have gone through in the last year ☐ I started a new job ☐ I worked different hours during the day ☐ I went on a learning course We are now going to think about changes that have happened to you in a bit more detail. It can be very easy to forget what has changed so we have made a checklist. Give handout 2 Could everyone look at the checklist and tick the parts that are true for you. You may want to talk to someone else about your answers. Feel free to move around. Allow time for people to answer. Check that everyone knows what to do. Did everyone tick something in the list? Were there any other changes that happened that are not in the list? If there are you can write or draw those, too. Does anyone have any comment about going through the checklist? Were you surprised by how much change you have experienced? Have a discussion Clearly, you have already experienced a lot of change and know a lot about it!

12 How did you make change happen?
What did you decide to do? How did you make it happen? Did you get help? Think about one time you decided to make a change. I am talking about a change that you can control. Not something that just happened – like a more expensive bill. How did you decide what to do? How did you make it happen? Did you get help? Just think about this yourself. Allow time. You can talk about how you made change happen with the person next to you. Doe anyone want to share? Scribe up ideas

13 The process of change Now Change What we want Thinking about how changes happen can help us get better at being in control of change. Whatever changes you want to make, it is useful to think about what you know now (your current situation) and what you want to happen (your dream future ). Let’s start by thinking about what is happening now – the current situation you are experiencing.

14 The current situation What is happening now?
Think about good things and bad things A lot of plans to change things do not work because people do not spend enough time thinking about what their current situation is. You need to be brave and honest and think about the good and bad things that are happening. It can be hard when people say what we are doing is wrong.

15 Think about your life now
What is going on for you? What are you doing? What is working? What is not working? What feedback have you had from others? What do you want to do in a different way? What needs to change? Here are some questions you could think about. Read slide Give handout 3 You could think of this process as being like a doctor who is working out what is wrong but not giving you the medicine yet. When you have thought about these things you can write or draw what you want to change on page 2 of handout 3. When you have made a note you can talk about what you have written to the person sitting next to you. Make sure everyone knows what they are doing

16 What would you like the future to look like?
What could you be doing? What has to change? What should be different? Now we are going to think about the future. Can you say what you want your future to be like? What could you be doing? What has to change? What should be different? Try to imagine the perfect future where anything is possible. Don’t worry about how you will do it. Don’t worry about things that could go wrong. To bring this perfect future to life let’s draw it. Don’t worry about how good you are at drawing. There is a space on page 3 of handout 3. Allow time Talk to the person next to you about your drawing. Does anyone want to show us their drawing and talk about it?

17 For change to happen… Learn Let go
Change is always about learning. To learn something new we may need to let go of what we have been doing before. Do you know what I mean by letting go? It’s a tricky idea so, to help you think about change and letting go you can think about a trapeze artist. Make sure everyone knows what a trapeze artist is. The trapeze artist knows that she has to let go of the bar she is holding to be ready for the bar coming her way. She has to let go of the old bar that is making her safe now so that she can be safe in the future. The old bar will not take her where she needs to go. Change can require us to give up old ways .

18 Change takes time Change in the future Now
Change makes us think about new ways of doing things. It takes time. It is often a bit of a twisty path as things get in the way of change. For change to happen we may need to unlearn things we used to believe be open to new ideas test our assumptions - or test what we have always thought be prepared to change our behaviour We also have to deal with other people and what they think. Now

19 How do you respond to change?
A change I could not make Now we have talked about changes that have taken place. It is likely that there are other changes that we wanted but that did not happen. Most of us will have a lot. Give handout 4 Think of one change that you tried to make but failed. On handout 4 – write or draw what you failed to change and why. I’ll give you an example from my life. I tried to get more fit and healthy but I stopped doing enough exercise and I failed [use this example or one of your own] Give time to do. Check people know what they are doing. Does anyone want to share what they thought about?

20 How do you respond to change?
A change I made Now think about a change you made. We are talking about a change you decided to make and were successful. An example from my life is that I decided to change jobs. I applied for a new job and got the job [use this example or one of your own] Even though it was a change you wanted, did you find it easy? What helped you make the change? There is space in handout 4 to make a note. Give time to do. Check people know what they are doing. Does anyone want to share what they thought about? Discussion

21 The effect of change Change can be very hard.
We like doing things the way we always have. We’ll see how change feels right now, together. If you can, cross your arms like the girl in the photo. Has everyone done that? Great. Unfold your arms. Now everyone cross your arms the other way. What that means is, if your left arm is usually on top of your right arm, this time make sure you fold your arms with your right arm above your left arm. Allow time Unfold your arms. Did that feel odd? Now fold your arms again. How did you fold your arms? The way you did the 1st time or the new way? Have a discussion if time allows.

22 7 things that happen when there is change
1. People will uncomfortable  2. People will think about what they have to give up 3. People will feel alone even if others are also going through change 4. People can handle only so much change 7 things that happen when there is change So, do we all agree that change can be hard? If we want to be leaders it is likely that we will work to make good changes. If you want skills to manage these changes it can help to think about what usually happens when there is change. Read slide and talk about each so that people understand. Continues on next slide

23 7 things that happen when there is change
5. Some people are more ready for change than others 6. People will be concerned that they do not have enough resources (like time, money and skills) 7. If you take the pressure off, people will go back to the way they used to do things 7 things that happen when there is change Read slide and talk about each so that people understand.

24 Change brings loss Loss of security You may no longer know what to do
Loss of relationships Loss of direction Change brings loss Change can bring loss in a range of ways. It could be a loss relating to Security – you may no longer feel in control or know what will happen in the future Competence – you may no longer feel like you know what to do. People can sometimes start to feel embarrassed when they are faced with new tasks because they do not know how to do them. It is hard to admit that you do not know how to do something Relationships – you may no longer see people that you know. People often lose their sense of belonging to a group Sense of direction – people can lose an understanding of where they are going and why they are going there Each of the losses can cause an emotional response that is like grief. We all have to move past our loss if we are to accept the change and move forward . Have you felt like this when something has changed? Maybe you changed classes at school? Maybe you got a new job? Maybe you changed where you live? Does anyone want to share an example? If nobody does, share an example of your own eg When I changed jobs, it was something I wanted but I still had to learn new things and meet new people. I felt like I had lost some control.

25 Working with people who do not want change
It is different It is better But it is not what we had Because change can result in loss, it is not surprising that many people resist change. They try to stop it or put it off. For example, think about moving home. The house that you are moving to may be nicer but you will need to give up the home you are in. The home you are in is not as nice but it is familiar you have decorated it you know the neighbours. There is loss. If we are to lead and bring about change, we need to know why people resist change. We should notice it is happening. We may get some useful information about how to make the changes we want if we listen to why people are resisting. Or if we ask ourselves what we are resisting.

26 Reasons for not changing
Think about a change you made but resisted. Give handout 5 Have a look at the reasons other people have given for not changing. Reasons like Read slide Think about how you have resisted change. You can tick the answers that apply to you or you can write or draw something else. Be honest with yourself. Allow time Does anyone want to share what they wrote?

27 Signs that people do not want to change
People make excuses  Gossip and talk behind each others backs They do not turn up They question changes Say bad things about the change So how can you tell if people are resisting? You may notice things like these. Read slide Have you ever noticed people doing these things? Have you ever done them? Have a discussion

28 Overcoming resistance to change
We are now going to watch a video about overcoming resistance to change. You can make some notes about tips you get on page 3 of handout 5. Watch video Discuss Give people a chance to write or draw tips.  Overcoming resistance to change – Isn’t it obvious

29 Moving through change –
4 phases Denial Resistance Exploration Commitment Some people move through change faster than others. We need to check how other people are. It is useful to know about all the stages of change so that you can support people to experience change. Knowing all the stages can also help us make changes in our own life. These are the 4 stages of change. Read the slide. Give handout 6 Handout 6 includes a more detailed diagram that talks about the phases, how people react in the phases and what you can do to support them to move through the phase and make change. Read through the handout. Note that info in the handout is not in the slides. Discuss arrow diagram – including signs of resistance. Discuss each question. Give time to answer questions ***If you had time – you could do some role plays around this. People could practice resisting with their partner working to overcome the resistance.

30 My change plan What do I want to change?
What do I need to get the future I want? What do I need to give up to make change? Who am I going to ask for help? How will I know that I have been successful? Now that you understand more about how to make changes happen it is time to make some changes! Write or draw your own change plan. Give handout 7 Read through the questions. In the time we have left we will get started today. Talk to the person sitting next to you and make some notes. But make sure you share it with someone you trust so that they can support you through the changes you want to make in your life and your community. Make sure everyone knows what they are doing.

31 Evaluation What did you learn at this workshop?
What 2 actions will you take? What else do you want to learn about? Hand out evaluation or use this slide. We have come to the end of the training session and it would be great to hear what you think about it. What did you learn at this workshop? What 2 actions will you take? What else do you want to learn about? Optional: Scribe up quote and discuss before people leave. Use this or choose your own. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek.” Barack Obama (American President)
