2 What does “essential” mean?
For each unit we study, we will be analyzing “Essential Questions” or EQs. Brainstorm meaning of “essential” Read the questions with your partner Do a little intro of each – more depth in the coming days What does “essential” mean?

3 Contributions EQ How does learning about ancient cultures impact how you understand the world and our connections to other people and countries?

4 How does learning the “history” of yourself and your classmates help you better understand and connect with them? Personal Examples Ancient Ex: Learning the values of an ancient philosopher named Confucius helps us better understand Chinese culture and relationships today.

5 Geography EQ How does geography influence how people live, move, and define regions?

6 How does geography influence your every day life?
Personal Example: Ancient Ex: In ancient Egypt, people lived along the banks of the Nile River because Egypt is a desert. They needed water for themselves and their crops. This was also a disadvantage as the Nile flooded and could destroy homes and lives.

7 Religion EQ What is the role of religion in ancient civilizations, and how does it still impact today’s world? Early Religions Hinduism Judaism Buddhism Christianity Islam

8 How does religion influence the way you live?
Personal Example: Ancient Ex: In ancient Mesopotamia, people believed the gods caused natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. Therefore, people worked constantly to keep the gods happy.

9 History EQ How do we use inferences and connections from reliable sources to build understanding?

10 How do you get information you need?
Personal Example: WE DO THIS EVERY DAY! Historians also analyze primary and secondary sources to understand the past. By analyzing ancient human bones and other artifacts we can learn about their life and culture.

11 Government EQ How is power defined, used, and transferred in ancient and modern governments?

12 Who has power in your life and why?
Personal Example: Ancient Ex: Early people also gave the power to elders because of their wisdom or the strongest because of their physical power. In ancient Rome an emperor held the power. The emperor told people he was chosen by the gods, and therefore people had to obey his rules!

13 No correct answer is awesome
No correct answer is awesome! Means you are very often right if you can support your answer with clear details and facts! WHY are they essential – ESPECIALLY for ancient places as we will study them in this course… There is no one correct answer to any of these questions! So WHY are these questions “essential” to try and answer?
