4 FIELD STUDY Field studies allow scientists to compare two conditions as they exist in nature. Scientists observe and gather data to answer a question without changing environment they are studying. Your grade on this STUDY will be added to your FINAL grade. It will be a presentation of the FIELD STUDY you design and report your findings during finals.

5 Field Study: Focus on answering the question: what can we measure?

6 Do dandelions grow more in the middle or near the edges of a field? 
Are more insects found around our school in the morning or the afternoon?  Where do you find the most pill bugs (isopods): under a rock, in the grass, or under bushes?  Are soil temperatures the warmest at a depth of 5 cm, 10cm, or 15cm?  What side of trees do nonvascular plants like mosses and liverworts live?   Which location (under bushes, open grass, or on black top) has the highest temperature at 10:00am at our High School?  Do tree species, tree density, tree diameter, or tree height differ between north and south facing slopes?  Do birds sing more from 8:30-9:00 a.m. or 3:00-3:30 p.m. in June?  What is the relationship between the number of days over 60 F and the presence of dandelion flowers on a field?

Introduction: What were you curious about? What were you interested in studying? What is your investigative question? Design: Hypothesis (if… because…) Procedure (materials, conditions to be compared, data to be collected, method for collecting data, environmental conditions to be recorded, etc.) Data: Results (data) collected Graph of data Explanation of data (high, low, averages, differences, etc.) Conclusion: Answer to investigative question using data Was your hypothesis correct/incorrect? Scientific explanation (why does this make sense or not? What alternative explanations might also explain your results?)

Make sure your procedure is checked off by Ms. G! Create your data table GET THIS APPROVED BY MS. G BEFORE GOING ON! Start taking data! Bring your data table, materials needed to measure data, and something to write with outside. Go to your different locations, measure/record data, and return Analyze your data when you are finished! You need: Completed Data Table Graph of data Explanation of data (high, low, averages, differences, etc) YOU ARE HERE!
