1 Saying No: Vendors Mark was walking on the street in Beijing. Several vendors stopped him, asking him to buy some kind of souvenir. Mark really wanted to buy some kind of cultural products at a reasonable price.

2 2. Saying No: Taxi The taxi driver tried to rip you off because he doesn’t know much Chinese. 绕 rao4 远路 You wanted to negotiate with the driver and warn him.

3 3. Saying No: Thief Jenny caught a pick-pocket but the guy speaks with a dialect while all others understood except for you. They believed that you got the wrong guy. You wanted to get yourself out of the trouble.

4 4. Saying No: Drinking You were invited by your friend Huang to have a dinner with his/her family. To show their highest respect, his family continued making you drink the alcohol. Location 1: at his/her home Location 2: in the restaurant

The grandma of one friend said “ You should watch your diet because you are a little fat now.” Her stand: she is very respectful as she cares about your health and if you were her grand child, the sentence would be: ”You look so ugly! Eat less!”

6 6. Saying No: Racist You have had remarkable experiences hearing Chinese giving racial opinions. Some of them are from your good Chinese friends. You believe that at least you can help your friends to grow. After you shared your opinion with me several times, they were not close to you any more. Instead, you heard that you were regarded as low culture competency and ignorant.
