9 Local talent insights | US
2016 | US | Students | All main fields of study Local talent insights | US Purpose & Care | US undergraduates pursue purpose- driven careers and aspire to dedicate themselves to good causes. Among nearly all types of students, the desire to be dedicated to a cause has increased steadily among nearly every type of student – it is highest among those in the sciences and humanities, and lowest for those in business. Inspiring purpose | Google, Peace Corps, NASA, Disney, and the FBI are among the employers most associated with inspiring purpose, and among the best-ranked across fields of study. Innovation & patriotism trending | Space, defense, and government employers tend to be strongly associated with purpose and good causes, and to be well-represented among the most attractive employers in the US, especially NASA, Space X, FBI, and the CIA. Silicon Valley | Also a sector tending to be strongly associated with innovation, creativity, and purpose, top tech employers Google, Tesla, Space X, and Apple tend to be ubiquitously attractive. The US is a leader among developed nations when it comes to talent working for startups and starting up their own businesses. Healthcare | Interest in the industry is high among science and humanities students, and jobs in this sector are among the fastest growing in US. Aging boomers need STEM graduates (and upskilled non-STEM majors) to deliver the next generation of healthcare and biotechnology. Business Professional services firms hold their own; consultancies see some nice gains. Desire to work for technology firms & startups is high. Fast-moving consumer goods firms become less attractive, but fashion and active wear brands such as Nike and Patagonia gain. Interest in real estate sales and finance gaining. Engineering Space & defense (NASA, Boeing, Space X) dominate the top 30 rankings. Upswing in interest as well in public sector, with significant gains for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Peace Corps. Auto innovator Tesla by far the most attractive in the industry, followed by Ford. Computer Science Strong interest in startups — while Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook lead, a host of startups enter among the most attractive employers each year. Significant losses though for IBM, Oracle, Yahoo!, as well as several hardware-focused employers. Security & aerospace very attractive, with NASA, FBI, the CIA, Space X, and the NSA all among the top 20 employers. Natural Sciences Healthcare-related employers dominate, including Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, and Centers for Disease Control. Overall losses for pharmaceuticals employers though. Public sector employers attractive and mostly up in the rankings, with NASA, EPA, Peace Corps, FBI all in Top 10, and all three armed forces in the Top 30. Humanities/Liberal Arts/Education Media reigns with Disney, National Geographic, NBCUniversal, and Random House in the Top 15. Public sector strong, with UN, FBI, Peace Corps, Department of State and the CIA in the Top 10.

Employer Presentations should be better advertised, so I know when they were happening. I am so busy I can't always seek them out. If there were companies I am actually interested in at career fairs. I want to use virtual fairs to grasp a better understanding of the company, along with feedback from everyday employees to gain more knowledge of the work-life atmosphere. Not interested in virtual career fairs/employer meet-ups. I prefer face to face interactions. If career fairs offered opportunities outside of business and science! Where are the humanities employers?? Having more senior executives give the employer presentations would be of greater interest. What would make you more likely to use these career service offerings? (Career / job / internship fairs; Employer presentations; Virtual career fairs/meet-ups with employers). These are generic quotes.

82 The Universum Career Profiles
2016 | US | Students | All main fields of study The Universum Career Profiles CAREERISTS IDEALISTS are future-oriented individuals who ultimately want to be managers and leaders of groups of people in a business environment. They have no problem starting from the bottom and learning what each rung on the ladder is like. In fact, many Careerists consider this process imperative to being a well-rounded leader later on in their careers. Careerists tend to be ambitious, but are also team-oriented, so they often bring others up along with them (riding their coattails so to speak). Careerists are also adaptable, meaning they are not set on any one way of achieving success and will instead do whatever they need to in order to adjust to a given situation. want to work in organizations that value and respect their employees, while taking an ethical stand on issues of corporate responsibility. As might be expected, an idealist values environmental sustainability and wants to align with companies that share the same values. Although idealists are dedicated to causes for the greater good, they are not merely dreamers and can offer viable solutions that often include creative experimentation. Idealists are fully capable of envisioning a higher state while implementing and leading teams in task-focused efforts. ENTREPRENEURS INTERNATIONALISTS are curious and creative individuals who are primarily focused on challenging and innovative work. When searching for job opportunities, entrepreneurs look for fast-growing companies that share their entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurs tend to be solution-focused, which means they are most effective when there is an active problem to solve. They lean towards leadership roles and are focused on team dynamics. Entrepreneurs can bore quickly if they feel stagnant, which means they are always looking to lead their team to new challenges. tend to be “big-picture” individuals who focus primarily on the future instead of day-to-day or historical situations.
