Objective: to gather material and hold a port to prove it was possible What Happened: it failed, Germans were more prepared than Allies.

5 What Happened in Italy The Italian Campaign – 1943 - 45
No other campaign cost more in lives lost and wounds suffered. Italy was under Mussolini's control until his fascist government fell (1943) and the Nazi's took control in Italy. Canadians landed in Sicily in June of 1945 and over the next couple of years worked their way through Ortona and broke through the Gothic Line (German offensive line in Northern Italy fortified with barbed wire, anti-tank ditches and minefields) Captured Mussolini in 1943, and then pushed back Germans until their surrender in May 1945.

6 3. D-Day – June 6th 1944 Otherwise known as:
Operation Overlord Normandy Beach Landing Operation Neptune Allied Invasion of Nazi Occupied Europe This was the allies last attempt to get into Nazi Occupied mainland Europe. At the same time the Italian Campaign was going on, and the Russians were beginning to move inland. It became the largest amphibious invasion of all time and the most heavily guarded secret. 175,00 naval personnel, 5,000 ships, 50 mile coastline,17,000,000 maps, 11,000 air planes and more. A very successful battle that allowed allies into mainland Europe.
