3 What are Vital Signs Vital signs are measurements of the body's most basic functions. The four main vital signs routinely monitored by medical professionals and health care providers include the following: Blood pressure (Blood pressure is not considered a vital sign, but is often measured along with the vital signs.) Body temperature Pulse rate Respiration rate (rate of breathing)

4 Why Monitor them Vital signs provide critical information (hence the name "vital") about a patient's state of health. In particular, they Can identify the existence of an acute medical problem. Are a means of rapidly quantifying the magnitude of an illness and how well the body is coping with the resultant physiologic stress. The more deranged the vitals, the sicker the patient. Are a marker of chronic disease states (e.g. hypertension is defined as chronically elevated blood pressure).

5 How are they monitored now
Patients under observation Hospital Home Medical institutions Results are read physically from the device connected to the patient Patients can be monitored remotely by their health providers only. One can also monitor himself with some wearable devices

6 What is the issue with the current monitoring system
Designed to monitor patients who are physically present. Monitors confirmed patients – Not meant for preventive measures. Monitored by the person – Not meant for emergency response. Monitored only by the individual’s healthcare providers – loved ones who care most, don’t monitor.

7 Global Objective A high level objective is to build a system that will make use of portable wearable device that interacts with a mobile application, which constantly sends vital signs readings to a cloud based server. The device should have a unique PIN that can be used by anybody (including loved ones) to register the device in his mobile application for monitoring. The server should be able to broadcast the readings from any active device to all mobile application that are monitoring the activities of that device. The mobile application should be able to connect to the device, accept vital signs reading from it, and send to the server. It should also be able to receive real-time readings from the server, and also past readings and display it on a dashboard.

9 Project Overview Vital Signs Monitoring System(VSMS)
The VSMS will be made up of three major components. The client side mobile application, the vital signs wearable device and cloud based server. The wearable device is a hardware device that will have a direct contact with the monitored individual. It will be connected to the mobile application so that it can read the individual's vital signs and send the values to the mobile application. The mobile application can be used to either receive vitals signs readings from a device and also send to the server, or monitor the readings from another device(s). The mobile application will provide a communication channel between the application and vital signs device. It will also provide a two way communication channel between the application and the cloud based server. The mobile application will also have a dashboard for all connected vital signs devices. The cloud based server will server as a broadcaster, that will receive vital signs readings from each mobile app , store them, and broadcast them to all mobile app monitoring them.

11 Stakeholders/Interests
Device bearer Person wearing the device, who wants his/her vital signs to be monitored or recorded. Needs a way to allow his/her loved ones and caregivers monitor his/her vital signs in real-time. Monitor (relatives and friends or caregiver) Person who is interested in the vital signs records of a device bearer. Needs a means for monitoring someone’s vital signs remotely in real-time. Developer The software engineer building the system. Interested in providing a standard solution to other stakeholders.

13 Preliminary Requirements Analysis – Non -Functional
The accuracy of the vital sign measurement should be good enough The real-time vital signs data shall be transferred from the VSMS device to the phone as soon as possible. The vital signs wearable devices should be portable. The battery of vital signs wearable devices shall last for as long as possible. The data of vital signs and alarm information shall be securely stored . The navigation of the system shall be seamless and evident to all users. All the alarms produced by the VSMS mobile application shall be noticeable.

15 Set Vital Signs alerts Description - This requirement is incomplete. It does not specify who shall set up alarm point and adjust the alarm limit. Option 1 – Only the elderly shall be able to set up and adjust the alarm limit. Option 2 – Both the elderly and assistive people shall be able to set up and adjust the alarm limit. Decision and Rationale – (Option 2) Once the alarm point and alarm limit is set up properly on the elderly’s phone, there is no need for assistive people to set up another alarm standard.

17 The assistive people shall receive the alarm notification as soon as possible.
Description - This requirement is incomplete. It does not specify how soon the assistive people shall receive the alarm notification. Option 1 – Within 1 second after the alarm point triggered. Option 2 – Within 10 second after the alarm point triggered. Option 3 – Within 30 second after the alarm point triggered. Decision and Rationale – (Option 2) 10 seconds is more realistic. 1 second is too clustered, while 30 seconds is a lot of delay.

Given the limited schedule for this project, the team can only accept a 10% creep rate. Rate is based on 1 requirement change equating to 8 hrs. worth of effort Currently have 21 preliminary requirements which allows for 2.1 requirement changes

29 VSMS – Market Leader Vital Sign Monitoring System (VSMS) is the clear market leader based on: Multiple people can monitor the elderly simultaneously. Memory impaired elderly people does not need to do anything during emergencies. Alarms will be set off on all monitoring phones. Historic data will be available even to people who just started monitoring.
