By: Maya Ross Russell

2 good strategy Why pick 5 beaches Surprise Attack Why Normandy
meticulous planning really, good intelligence. The most important factors for the success of D-Day were Why pick 5 beaches Surprise Attack Why Normandy Soldiers and people grounded to England Operation: TIGER Perfect timing and weather The gadgets Radio messages Operation: “Fortitude South” Help from the French resistance

3 D-day was not successful just because of fighting but also because of all behind the scenes work that was involved. All the amazing strategy, the meticulous planning and the excellent intelligence were the most important factors in the success of D-day.

4 good strategy

5 The leaders of D-day decided to use 5 beaches because if they only used 1 then all the Germans would need to do is do 1 big attack on the allies and it would be Dunkirk all over again

6 Operation: Overlord (D-day) was a really big surprise attack
Operation: Overlord (D-day) was a really big surprise attack. The Germans only found out about it when lookouts on the Atlantic wall saw 4,308 Ships on the horizon early on June 6th.

7 The decision to use Normandy instead of any other place was because spy planes noticed that it had the least amount of air guns to shoot down the planes dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines

8 Timing was also really important because the ships needed to land with low tide, full moon and really good weather.

9 Meticulous Planning and Practice

10 1 week before the D-day attack solders were grounded to the camp so that no information could be leaked out. At the same time all movement around England came to a minimum

11 = Ally ship route Operation tiger was a practice of D-day whereby soldiers had to board 3 ships and sail to an area in the south of England.

12 Landing ships were so important that several times the date of D-day had to be postponed.

13 Special equipment was invented just for D-day such as tanks with chains on the side that would mine sweep the beaches. Also there were a few tanks with reels of cotton on the front so that it would be easier for tanks to land on the soft sand. Then there was the one that was never forgotten and that was the tanks with the canvas on the side to make it float. All these different tanks was known as “Hobart's Funnies”

14 Really good intelligence

15 “The camels back is hairy”
The allies sent important messages to the French resistance with messenger pigeons for awhile until the Germans kept on shooting them down. So then they sent coded messages by radio to tell them when D-day would happen and where it would be happening.

16 Operation: Fortitude South Map
Double agents fed false information to the Germans about D-day such as the thought that D-day was just a decoy and that the actual attack would be at Calais. Normandy route Operation fortitude route

17 Operation fortitude south
The allies also made inflatable ships, tanks and boats and placed them in Dover to fool the Germans. Double agent Codenamed ‘Garbo’ fed the decoy message to the Germans

18 The French resistance blew up railroads to stop the Germans from receiving all sorts of guns and equipment.

19 All that amazing strategy, the meticulous planning and the excellent Intelligence led to the allies ultimate success in WWII which couldn’t have happened without D-day.
