Paul begins his letter to the Romans by talking first to the Jews, and then shifting his attention to the Gentiles. He starts off by talking to them about how God called them through Abraham, and how God has been fulfilling these promises through them even though they have failed many times in the past.

During this time in Rome, the fastest growing religion wasn’t Christianity, but rather Emperor Worship. This was Caesar’s way of telling the people that he was the Savior, that he was the Lord, and the Prince of Peace. In 49 AD, Claudius the Emperor kicked out all of the Jewish people out of Rome. In 54 AD, Claudius died and the Jewish people were allowed to return. When the people returned, their churches did not look the same. This caused lots of problems.

Paul tells the people that their problem is that they have allowed
Pride to get in the way. Two different types of people learning what it means to worship a crucified Savior. Paul is echoing God’s dream of a new Humanity, one that is centered on the cross of Jesus.

Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been Justified through Faith, we have Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:2-9 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Romans 5:2-9 (cont.) 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

Romans 5:10-11 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

God is not only Reconciling us to Him, but He is also reconciling
us to one Another. Paul is someone who killed Christians, now he is the one attempting to reconcile them to God and to each other. Having someone come face to face with their own brokenness and also to their risen Savior can be very difficult.

Paul’s strategy is not to Deconstruct their individual stories, but rather to give them a Larger story and purpose in Life.

The Church is at her best when she preaches Christ crucified.”
