18 Types of Information Information itself can be categorized into two broad types: Primary: information in its original, first-hand presentation Often used in historical research enables the researcher to “return” to the past and get as close as possible to an historical event or time period Examples of this type of information, usually referred to as primary sources, include:

Original artwork Articles and books describing an event or time period written at the time the event(s) occurred. Often written by eye-witnesses or journalists. Articles presenting data and results of newly conducted scientific experiments Blogs Wikis Diaries Speeches Interviews Opinion polls, surveys, census data Letters Memos, messages Manuscripts Memoirs and autobiographies Birth and death records Texts of court decisions, statutes, state propositions, etc.

Information that examines, interprets, or discusses current or historical events or phenomenon They are removed in time from the original facts or events and are therefore second-hand commentaries or interpretations.
