Chapter 3 Lesson 1

2 Classifying Based on Shared Features
Biologists divide animals into groups based on their similarities. Example: Sparrows, Falcons, and Flamingos are all birds because they all have feather

3 To classify something is to group things based on features they share.
Scientists use similar features of organisms to determine how they relate. They use similarities in: Appearance Cell structure Heredity material in cells How the organism gets nutrients How the Organism reproduces Organisms that have more features in common are more related!

4 Seven Levels of Classification
Kingdom (Highest level of classification) Phylum (Subdivision of a kingdom) Class Order Family Genus (A group of living things that includes separate species) Species (A group of organisms that can breed with each other to produce offspring like themselves)

6 Scientists created scientific names for animals to prevent confusion.
A scientific name is the name given to each species consisting of its genus and its species. Example: Genus Species Felis Concolor Canis lupus familiaris catus Carassius auratus
