11 But where, oh where, did Cindy’s story begin?
The earliest dated version of the Cinderella story appears in a Chinese book written between A.D. 850 and This ninth century tale was recorded by Taun Ch-eng-shih, one of history’s earliest folktale collectors. He wrote that he had first heard of the story from a servant who had been with his family for years. No more is known about the tale’s origins (Panati, 1987, p. 173). 14 Developing Good Questions: Example 1
Why are these supernatural elements important? What elements of magic are present in various Cinderella stories? What purpose(s) do these supernatural elements serve? Supernatural Elements How does the choice of supernatural element affect the text’s meaning (symbolism)? Can we make any cultural inferences based on the supernatural elements in the story?

15 LESSONS Developing Good Questions: Example 2
How do these tales differ from one culture to the next? What lessons about how we should behave exist in these tales? What cultural inferences do these differences lead us to make? LESSONS What do these lessons tell us about the power relationships in the tales and their context? Which lessons are most salient (and why)? What do these lessons tell us about the intended audience? Are these lessons specifically addressing race, gender, or social class? If so, what do they tell us?

16 Team Activity D B A In your teams, first, generate a list of thoughtful questions about your assigned text. Look at the pictures Use prior knowledge about the culture Second, make predictions based on these questions about your assigned text.
