3 Bell Ringer How do you know if a sentence has correct subject-verb agreement? (Write your response in a paragraph and be sure to use the terms you learned this quarter, such as singular, plural, etc.)

4 Bell ringer model answer
A reader will know if subjects and verbs agree by checking if they agree in number. For example, a reader must first remove any prepositions because a subject and a verb are never found inside of prepositional phrases. Next, he or she should locate the subject and label it singular with an “S” if it is only one or plural with a “P” if it is more than one. Then, find the verb and do the same things. If the subject and verb are both singular or both plural, then the subject and the verb agree. If they are different, the verb should be changed to agree.

Compound Subjects In most cases, two subjects joined by “AND” will take a plural verb. Ex. The teacher and the students enjoy crispito day in the cafeteria. EXCEPTION: If the two subjects are considered to be one unit, they will take a singular verb. Spaghetti and meatballs is her favorite dinner

The subject of the sentence never lives inside a prepositional phrase. (So take them out to help you find the subject and the verb.)

17 indefinite Pronouns Indefinite pronouns fall into three categories:
Those that are always singular Those that are always plural Those that can be singular or plural

18 Indefinite Pronouns (group 1)
The following indefinite pronouns always take a singular verb: everyone, everybody, everything, nobody, no one, nothing, somebody, someone, something, anybody, anyone, anything, each, either, neither, and one. Ex. Each of the players likes going to practice. (Remember to remove the prepositional phrases)

Just remember: “If it ends in ONE, THING, or BODY it’s singular” And either, neither, each, and nor

The following indefinite pronouns always take a plural verb: many, several, few, both Ex. Several of the cookies were eaten before the party. (Remember to remove the prepositional phrases)

22 Indefinite Pronouns (group 3)
The following indefinite pronouns can be either singular or plural, depending on what they are referring to: none, some, most, all, any Ex. Some of the people are going boating. Ex. Some of the money is missing. (Look at the prepositional phrase to determine if the indefinite pronoun is singular or plural)
