Songs, Skits, and Yells! Presented by Michael Chiprich Cubmaster, Pack 21 – MDSC

2 Who am I? (Okay, a bit of a brag page)
Former Cubscout and Boy Scout 2nd Year as Cubmaster of Pack 21 – MDSC Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner – D.S. Dad of a Bear Scout and two future Venture crew members (well…they are 1 and 5) 

3 What this presentation is not…
Short The “right way” to do things A cure for stage fright The presentation of your dreams! (Debatable…)

4 What this presentation is…
Ideas for jazzing the show Examples of ideas that worked for my pack and others A pointer to good online resources Hopefully, a time where we can share ideas

5 Agenda Intro Why do this? PANAMA! Songs Skits Run-ons Campfire!
Online Resources

6 Why do this? (Oh my, soooo many words….)
It gives the boys a chance to have a little fun with eachother and gives them the spotlight! Confidence building and public speaking! Getting up in front of everyone takes courage, so when you make it fun it really does build confidence in the individual Scouts on getting in front of groups. I LOVE seeing the kids progress through the years in this! BECAUSE IT’S FUN! (If you let it be.)

7 PANAMA! Coming Up With the Plan!
(Remember: Get every den involved!)

8 Campfire or Pack meeting? Either way - You NEED an agenda!!!
Consistency is good; but change is also okay (find a balance) Keep it simple Keep it flowing (90 min in my world 70 boys and 9 dens + Lions…) Be flexible! Have a copy on hand Get every den involved Get parents and leaders involved Cubmaster is the Ringmaster not the star of the show!

9 Songs Cub Scouts and families NEED to sing!

10 Songs Try having a Cubmaster song as well as a den song
You don’t need to be good, just loud and full of energy! Use leaders and other adults! Try to mix it up, but using the same songs over time also works well

11 Kid’s Music vs. Children’s Music
Children’s Music: Perfect, happy, sometimes fun for Tigers and lower Kid’s Music: Edgy, sometimes borderline inappropriate (in their minds), fun for all

12 Song Tips for Cubmaster
Give the audience something to do Hand motions, dancing, their own part, and so on DO NOT PASS OUT SONG SHEETS! Change songs to fit theme: Hole in the ground (Coffin in the ground) Tarzan of the Apes – Monster Style! Boom Chicka Boom – ANYTHING OOM! If the Cubmaster does not like to sing, find someone who does! REPEAT AFTER ME IS YOUR FRIEND!

13 Songs for Dens to Perform
Most important to get the scouts involved Keep it simple and easy to learn Song sheets for the den are okay (sometimes)

14 Some of my Favorite Songs
Bo Diddly Bop! (Pizza Man)…LOUD STYLE! Bazooka Bubble Gum On Top of Spagetti Purple Soup Boom Chicka Boom

15 Skits Everyone gets a part!

16 Skits A skit by leaders or other adults can be lots of fun!
Remember skits can be edgy and “inappropriate” just like songs Keep them short and sweet Get every scout in the den involved Do you have a microphone? Know your audience Don’t Offend (that changes over time) Repetition sometimes works very well!

17 Some of my Favorite Skits
Invisible bench Gotta Wee Tankity Tank No Skit! SUB MISSION ONE

18 Jokes & Run-Ons Don’t miss out on the fun and laughs!

19 Assign Jokes and/or Run-Ons to Dens
Each scout in the den gets to tell a joke Knock-Knock jokes are classic Groaners are preferred! Easy to fit into a pack meeting theme Keep them short (no long stories)

20 A Run-On? A mini-skit that lasts a minute or so (did anyone watch Laugh-In?) Usually involves two people Sometimes they build on each other Don’t worry about scheduling them in the program, just let them happen Run-ons by adults and leaders are great! Memorization is good, but not necessary

21 CAMPFIRE!!! Keep it rolling!

22 Campfire Program Two nights? ADULT Program night 1!
Get every den involved with TWO – one song/on skit Get some run-ons going with other adults (kids at own risk) NO DEAD AIR Intro and Closing – Start <<<<---> End The Cubmaster is the ringmaster…not the star.
