1 Mapping of recreational values of forests in Lorraine
EFESE Mapping of recreational values of forests in Lorraine Jens Abildtrup Laboratoire d’Economie Forestière 1

2 Mapping of recreational value of forests in Lorraine
Objective Based on a survey on recreational use of forest in Lorraine carried out in 2010 : To map the marginal willingness-to-pay (WTP) of changes in quality and access to forests in Lorraine by the population living in Lorraine “Standard approach”, however : High resolution spatial data Taking into account the choice of travel mode Scenario analysis: also include spatial interactions – things may move 2

3 Spatial resolution: Municipalities: 2337 Forest units: 5268 Data Web-based survey 2010 : 526 forest visitors (described in Abildtrup et al JEEP) Data on: number of visits, which forest visited most often, travel mode, socio- demographics, Choice experiment GIS database Location of residence Forest characteristics Distance from residence to forest We had in fact 1000 respondents in survey but not all had visited a forest and not all had indicated on a carte which forest visited. 3

4 Modelling approch : Random utility model
Utility (forest j) = f(attributes of forest j)+ random term X j=4 Conifère j=1 Hêtre, adulte j=3 j=2 Hêtre, jeune lac Chemin de randonnée balisé Ville distance i=1 Ville arbre à feuilles

5 Comment définir les unités de forêt pertinent pour le recréation?
Les forêts en Lorraine Google Map Où les forêt s visités sont identifiées Less than 10 ha More than 500 ha, divide the forest. Roads where used. If there we know from the map that there is a certain entrance to the forest a circle is made around the forest

6 The observed visits in survey
Our random utility model will for each individual in Lorraine provide the probability of visisting a specific forest in Lorraine Nancy

7 Results: site selection model
Variable Contribution to utility P[|Z|>z] One path for trekking 0.372 0.010 More paths for trekking 0.384 0.045 Parking or picnic place 0.462 0.005 Parking & picnic place 0.958 <0.001 Lake or river 0.224 0.101 Forest area 0.950 0.001 Share public-owned forest 9.562  Share of high trees 3.180 0.174 Probabilities of Blueberries 1.065 0.338 Natural Reserve -0.737 0.176 Number of Forest Roads -6.250 Travel cost -1.294 McFadden Pseudo R-squared 0.40

8 Number visits to forests
Average number of visits per year: 26 Number of visits depend on distance to and quality of local forests as well as characteristics of the household. Trip demand model to assess changes in number of visits by chaning acces or quality of forests
