Partner notification is the process of tracing and contacting previous sexual partners of people who receive positive results from sexual health screening. It is a core component in the prevention of sexually transmitted infections in order to prevent onward transmission and negative outcomes for those who may carry the infection unknowingly.
The process of Partner Notification can be complex, sensitive and time consuming and often involves tracing several partners over the previous year. In East Sussex, sexual Health Advisers are part of a national network that have an integrated referral system and are highly trained in effective partner notification methods. This approach helps to ensure all possible contacts of infection are given the opportunity, to be informed, tested, access treatment and be assisted with onward partner notification. Specialist Sexual Health Advisers offer anonymous tracing ensuring the identity of the individual (Index patient) remains confidential.
East Sussex County Council has commissioned ESHT to provide a specialist sexual health adviser to ensure Partner Notification is more broadly available regardless of where the person originally tested.
Referral Criteria
All those who test positive for Chlamydia / Gonorrhoea
All those who report to be a contact of positive Chlamydia /Gonorrhoea
Management of positive Chlamydia
Treat index patient and regular partner (if available) and advise no sexual contact for 1 week after treatment
Azithromycin 1 gm po stat or
Doxycycline 100mg bd po 1 week
In all cases refer to the sexual Health Adviser* for follow up and Partner Notification.
Management of positive Gonorrhoea   
Please make an immediate referral of the index patient to the sexual Health Adviser* for treatment, follow up, test of cure and Partner Notification
