SMAC: The Paradigm Shift in IT
By Bongani Mhlophe
2
Preamble SMAC – A definition of each element
Market for SMAC – industry landscape, trends, market leaders and competitors, market response, market size and market share, growth, penetration strategies Country-based analysis – USA, India (a nation of wired citizens), South Africa, rest of Africa Oracle – Market share, target customers, challenges

` SMAC Social Media Mobility Analytics Cloud Computing
4
Introduction SMAC – A concept that currently drives innovation in businesses Not a hype or a technology fad, but a technological reality Adoption of SMAC technologies still low in India and SA, however, there has been an exponential growth in the adoption of smart devices in India (Emarketer, 2013) Market growth in India driven by SMAC is expected to be 30% ($1 trillion) by (Nasscom, n.d.) Issues that aid the adoption of SMAC – Privacy & security concerns Netflix has managed to harness the power of SMAC (Nasscom’s Strategic Review, 2014).

Social Media - Networking
The use of mobile and web-based technologies to facilitate an interactive dialogue - a meaningful way of deepening relationships with customers A social media strategy has become a must for all enterprises (Emarketer, 2013) Helps firms in recruiting and nurturing brand advocates and opinion leaders. Ironically, Facebook is blocked in China
8
Trends Currently, there are over 2 billion social media subscribers globally (Emarketer, 2013) Projected Indian user base of social networks is 550 million people by 2020 The average Indian users spend nearly 25% of their time on social networking. As per research firm Gartner, by 2015, India is pegged to have more Facebook users than any other country in the world
9
243,2 million internet users and 106 million active social media users Social media penetration = 8% Emergence of young (India) and black (SA) middle class Social Media Analytics Offerings Consulting Technology Solutions Engagement Solutions Analytics & BI Offerings Consulting customers to easily adopt social media and work closely with them to evolve strategies, roadmaps, and implementation to enhance business effectiveness Media engagement solutions for real time engagement on a global scale Technology solutions to address customers‘ social media requirements and integrate with CRM initiatives, Business Intelligence and customer analytics Insights and analysis services based on customer feedback, brand proficiency to gauge further insights Insights and analysis services based on customer feedback, brand proficiency to gauge further insights
10
Mobility – Accessible everywhere
There are 7.1 billion people living in this world and 6.6 billion are mobile subscribers (Agrawal, 2014) Enterprise side (BYOD) Consumer side (mobile apps) - 60 billion mobile app downloads in 2012 and this number is expected to cross the 100 billion mark in 2013 Mobile banking has emerged as innovative within the financial sector
11
Indian smartphone market grew by 229% in 2013 (Nasscom’s Strategic Review, 2014). More than 1million Indians are accessing internet through data connections on mobiles Key SMEs in mobility include, for example, MobileOne, Rapidvalue
12
Mobility Scenario in India
India has emerged as the second largest mobile market globally, behind only China The nation has also emerged as the 3rd-largest smartphone market (by shipments)
13
Mobility in Africa and Rest of the World
By 2017, one third of all mobile devices in Africa will be smart phones (GSMA, 2015), with South Africa leading in the industry, and also Nigeria (Emarketer, 2013) By 2020, there will be 30 billion connected devices with unique IP address High smart phone adoption by banks to cater for customer behavior and expectations – The world’s smart-phone penetration likely to be much higher than laptop and desktop penetration (Emarketer, 2013) Mobile banking and m-commerce are the most influential data applications of mobility Facebook is paying close to 20 billion to acquire Whatsapp, a mobile messaging app. Help in creating customized offers, leading to a compelling customer experience
14
Ánalytics - Forecasting future
Organizations’ ability to collect, comprehend and use the vast amount of data generated from technologies (Agrawal, 2014) Information overload – Need maths and statistics to convert raw data into meaningful data Pre-packaged softwares can be used to help clients or businesses in data analysis Big Data analytics is the process of applying advanced analytics and visualization techniques to large datasets to uncover hidden patterns and unknown correlations for effective decision making Competitive advantage – Depends on a firm’s ability to provide solutions for advanced analytics – combination of, e.g., statistics, neural networks, weibull analysis Other leading technology players such as Oracle, SAP, and EMC Google Analytics is an offering to enterprises for tracking the traffic on websites
15
Key Trends on Analytics
From ‘Traditional analytics’ to ‘Predictive analytics’ and now increasingly towards ‘Prescriptive analytics’ (where the decisions are driven by prescriptive models using business rules engines to help the companies to decide the “next best action”). Exponential increase in data The fastest growing sub-segment within Big Data will be Storage Hadoop technology – Becoming increasingly popular when accessing a tremendous amount of data, and then extracting value from it.
16
Key Trends on Analytics Cont..
The global analytics market is expected to reach ~ $25billion by 2015 India is at the early stage of adopting Big Data (structured and unstructured data) in advanced analytics (Agrawal, 2014) The usage of analytics is still at budding stage for SA businesses Mainly adopted by industries like banking and telecom to get ahead of the competition, e.g., India’s largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel (main provider IBM) Big Data will help in understanding the CUSTOMER BEHAVIOR
17
Cloud Technology The emergence of “as a service’’ paradigm – Delivery of services on the internet, allowing individuals & businesses to use software & hardware that are managed by third parties at a remote location (virtualization) Used to secure data and receive it in an event of a catastrophic event Movement from CapEx to OpEx – Includes data storage space, networks, servers, computer processing power & specialized corporate/user applications
18
Public cloud services have a larger pie of the total market
Public cloud grew from 18.5 percent in 2013 to a reach USD billion from USD billion in 2012, the growth being driven by the emerging segment IaaS (cloud compute, storage and print services)
19
Trends While IaaS is one of the most fastest growing segments, cloud advertising is the most dominating, which held a share of 48.0% in 2012 followed by cloud business process services segment (BPaaS) with a 28% share, (SaaS) at 14.7%, (IaaS) at 5.5%, cloud management and security services at 2.8 percent, and (PaaS) at 1%. Upward trend for cloud adoption (20% between 2012 and 2016)[EY, 2014]
20
Trends Cont… Clients (especially in India) are still primarily interested in IaaS (currently growing at 154% CAGR) and PaaS (currently growing at 54% CAGR) [Global public cloud services market, ] The global cloud market is expected to be ~ $675billion by 2020
21
Oracle’s Cloud Platform
Cloud Platform includes its Database, Java, and Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Fusion Middleware features in-memory analytics, mobile, and social capabilities Migration (from existing on-premises applications) to the cloud while satisfying various SMAC requirements Cloud services are provided across SaaS, PaaS, Data as a service (or DaaS), and IaaS. Oracle gets 80% of its revenue from the Fortune 2000 companies and various government agencies.
23
Conclusion SMAC has a high capability to upset their IT field (highly disruptive technologies) Gartner predicts that by 2017, SMAC stack will drive more than 26% of the total enterprise software market revenue, an increase from 12% in representing over $104 billion new revenue from this stack. An adoption of SMAC collaboratively rather separately may have a better impact on organisations This combination of technologies together is transforming the business models Essentially, SMAC should offer smart, secure and connected experience
