1 Connectrix Storage Networking Product Overview #GetModern
This presentation gives you an overview of the Connectrix family of storage networking products. For use cases please see: “Connectrix – Storage Networking for IT Transformation”.

2 Connectrix Product Classes
Directors Switches Mission-critical Environments Built-In Failover Highly Scalable Modular Edge and Midrange Deployment High Availability Through Redundancy Scalable Through ISLs Fixed There are two types of Connectrix products; enterprise directors and switches. Directors were purpose-built to provide the highest availability with redundant components and control processors that failover when needed. Switches are deployed in small to medium environments or on the edge of a large data center configuration.

19 Connectrix B-Series Key Features
ISL Trunking Aggregates multiple physical links into one logical link for speed and redundancy Virtual Fabrics Allows a physical switch to be partitioned into multiple logical switches Fabric Vision Maximizes uptime with proactive monitoring, management, & diagnostics Integrated Routing Fabrics can share frames without merging ICLs Allows direct connection of directors up to 2km with redundant (32x128Gb/s) backplane connections Congestion Control (SDDQ) Flow control mechanism that alleviates congestion THESE ARE THE KEY MDS FEATURES. THE PORT CHANNEL FEATURE OF THE MDS-9000 SERIES LETS YOU AGGREGATE TRAFFIC ACROSS MULTIPLE LINKS. OTHER SWITCH MANUFACTURERS SOMETIMES REFER TO THIS AS “TRUNKING.” PORT CHANNELS ARE AN ISL-AGGREGATION FEATURE, INCLUDED WITH NX-OS, THAT CAN BE USED TO CONSTRUCT A SINGLE LOGICAL ISL BETWEEN SWITCHES OUT OF UP TO 16 PHYSICAL ISLS. FROM A SAN-DESIGN PERSPECTIVE, THIS PROVIDES BOTH HIGHER THROUGHPUT CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN SWITCHES AND A HIGH-RESILIENCY CONNECTION. PORT CHANNELS CAN BE BUILT USING ANY LINE CARD ON ANY MODULE. TRAFFIC ACROSS A PORT CHANNEL BUNDLE IS AUTOMATICALLY LOAD-BALANCED WHILE PRESERVING IN-ORDER DELIVERY. VSANS ALLOW FOR MORE EFFICIENT SAN USAGE BY CREATING HARDWARE-BASED ISOLATED ENVIRONMENTS WITHIN A SINGLE SAN FABRIC. EACH VSAN CAN BE ZONED AS A TYPICAL SAN AND MAINTAINS ITS OWN FABRIC SERVICES FOR ADDED SCALABILITY AND RESILIENCE. VSANS ALLOW YOU TO SHARE THE COST OF THE SAN INFRASTRUCTURE AMONG ADDITIONAL USERS, WHILE ASSURING SEGREGATION AND SECURITY OF SAN TRAFFIC. IVR ALLOWS SHARING OF CENTRALIZED RESOURCES LIKE TAPE AND DISKS ACROSS VSANS WITHOUT MERGING FABRICS AN EXAMPLE A BACKUP SERVER SHARING TAPE. SMART ZONING HAS BEEN THE PRIMARY METHOD OF ACCESS CONTROL AMONG SAN DEVICES SINCE THE EARLY DAYS OF FIBRE CHANNEL, AND THERE HAVE BEEN FEW CHANGES IN THE WAY ZONING HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED SINCE THEN. THE MDS SMART ZONING FEATURE IS A MAJOR STEP FORWARD IN SIMPLIFYING ZONING TO REDUCE THE BURDEN ON ADMINISTRATORS AND ENABLE AUTOMATION OF SAN PROVISIONING WITHOUT AFFECTING SAN HARDWARE RESOURCE CONSUMPTION. SMART ZONING REQUIRES ALL MDS 9000 FAMILY SWITCHES IN THE FABRIC TO USE MDS 9000 NX-OS SOFTWARE RELEASE 5.2(6) OR LATER AND HAVE THE SMART ZONING FEATURE ENABLED. SMART ZONING CANNOT BE ENABLED IF THE FABRIC CONTAINS THIRD-PARTY SWITCHES OR SWITCHES RUNNING EARLIER VERSIONS OF MDS 9000 NX-OS OR SAN-OS. AFTER SMART ZONING IS ENABLED, YOU CANNOT ADD A SWITCH TO THE FABRIC THAT IS INCAPABLE OF SUPPORTING SMART ZONING. SMART ZONING IS AVAILABLE IN BOTH BASIC AND ENHANCED ZONING MODES. SMART ZONING IS ENABLED ON A PER-VSAN BASIS. AFTER IT HAS BEEN ENABLED FOR A VSAN, IT CAN BE DISABLED FOR INDIVIDUAL ZONES, SO IF YOU NEED TO HAVE STORAGE DEVICES TALK TO EACH OTHER FOR REPLICATION OR BACKUP PURPOSES, FOR INSTANCE, YOU CAN SIMPLY PUT THOSE DEVICES IN A ZONE OR A VSAN THAT DOES NOT HAVE SMART ZONING ENABLED.

20 Connectrix B-Series Fabric Vision
Automation that simplifies policy-based monitoring and alerting Cable and optic diagnostics that simplify the deployment and support of large fabrics Customizable health and performance dashboard, with all critical information on one screen Identifies, monitors, and analyzes performance of specific flows or frame types MAPS ClearLink Diagnostics Dashboards Flow Vision Quickly detects and clearly alerts high levels of latency, to help identify slow drain devices Automatically detects and recovers from bit errors, negating the need for retransmission Automatically recovers flow control buffer credit loss at the VC level, improving availability Addresses device IO storage through built-in instrumentation Monitoring And Alerting Policy Suite (MAPS) The Monitoring and Alerting Policy Suite, referred to as “MAPS”, is a policy-based monitoring and alerting tool that simplifies fabric-wide threshold configuration and monitoring. With pre-defined rules and pre-packaged policies that are based on best practices, administrators can quickly and easily configure monitoring policies across switches and fabrics. MAPS also provides integrated tools for in-depth reporting which improves the user’s ability to analyze and identify problem areas. If you feel like you’re always fire-fighting, MAPS provides proactive monitoring and alerting, automated trend analysis, and dashboard reporting to help you get ahead of the curve. Flow Vision Flow Vision enables administrators to identify, monitor and analyze specific application data flows without using taps. Flow Monitor, a key element of Flow Vision, provides comprehensive visibility into flows in the fabric, including the ability to automatically learn (discover) flows and non-disruptively monitor flow performance. Flow Monitor also provides statistics related to specific flows or frame types to gain insights into application performance. If deeper analysis is required, administrators can use the integrated Flow Mirror capability to non-disruptively create copies of specific data flows. Flow Vision is dependent on the new Connectrix B-Series “GEN 5 Hardware” or 16Gb/s-capable hardware that includes ASIC enhancements to fully support the Flow Monitoring feature. Fabric Performance Monitoring Forward Error Correction Buffer Credit Recovery IO Insight
