Placement of Students Enroll your student
Complete the “Home Language Survey” CELDT Test School Placement Samira: When you arrived, you completed your enrollment online to find out your neighborhood school. You have completed your enrollment and the home language survey with 4 questions. If you and your student speak another language at home other than English, we are required by law to administer a test in English, called the CELDT (California English Language Development Test). Language Development Programs administer the CELDT test. The results of the test will indicate the placement of your child.

Placement of Students (K-6)
Elementary Newcomer Locations University Park (Kindergarten through Grade 6) Culverdale ( Kindergarten through Grade 6) College Park ( Kindergarten through Grade 6) Newcomers/SEI Program (Grades K-12) Integrated and Designated ELD SDAIE/Sheltered Content Area Instruction Contact LDP for the latest information Erin: IUSD offers Newcomers and SEI programs at all grade levels if the student is considered to be a beginners. If your student receives a Beginning or Early Intermediate overall score on CELDT test, our recommendation is to go to our Newcomers program. The Newcomers program usually lasts for 1 year and is taught by credentialed, experienced teachers who are trained in teaching students at the beginning level. In addition to the Newcomer class there are Structured English Immersion (SEI) or sheltered classes at various sites. These classes are made up of a cluster of English only and English Learner students with a trained credentialed teacher. These programs use integrated and designated ELD as outlined by the state. In addition, teachers use SDAIE/Sheltered instruction to help students understand the content. The locations for elementary (grades K-6) are University Park, Culverdale, and College Park.

Middle School Newcomer Locations (7th & 8th) Rancho Middle School Venado Middle School High School Newcomer Locations (9th- 12th) University High School Irvine High School Erin: Middle school newcomers programs are at Rancho Middle School and Venado Middle School. For high school, the sites are Irvine High School and University High School. If the results for your student is intermediate, they will be placed in the mainstream class with appropriate support. If your student is fluent they will go to the mainstream class and not take the CELDT again in California. For those students who are not fluent, we will administer the CELDT test every school year until they are reclassified. **Mainstream with appropriate support and Integrated/Designated ELD**

Endorsed by the University of California, the California State University system and California Community Colleges, the Common Core State Standards outline what students should know and be able to do in reading and mathematics from kindergarten through the 12th grade. THese standards are aligned with the knowledge and skills deemed critical for college and career success and embrace the 4 C’s Communication, Collaboration. Critical Thinking and Creativity.

In order for students to grow into adults who can successfully navigate this world, young people have to learn how to use information. This means learning the qualities of good information, ***where it comes from, ***what it can be used for, and***how to use it in multiple contexts.

CCSS emphasizes hands-on experiences, opportunities to experiment and make mistakes, and try new approaches... . IUSD embraces intellectual risk-taking at all levels. In fact, the district Guiding Principles and practices state that students and staff will demonstrate intellectual risk- taking and embrace error as an integral part of the learning process. The CCSS allows for teachers to incorporate opportunities for our students to grow in this way.

It released the K-12 English Language Development Standards that outline the steps to success for our EL’s and maintains California’s commitment to providing English learner students with a high-quality program that will enable them to attain proficiency in English— developing the skills and confidence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are at the core of achievement inside and outside the classroom

Beginning to understand academic language and vocabulary.
Emerging The CA ELD Standards define the progression of language acquisition through three stages of proficiency. As students progress through the EMerging Level, students start to respond to more varied communication tasks using learned words and phrases with increasing ease. They engage in complex, cognitively demanding social and academic activiteis requiring language when provided with SUBSTANTIAL linguistic support. Beginning to understand academic language and vocabulary.

Expanding Students are moving from learned phrases towards being able to increasingly engage the ENglish language in more complex, cognitively demanding phrases. Increasing English skills in more contexts, learning more vocabulary and language structures.

Bridging Students at the bridging level can communicate effectively with various audiences on a wide range of familiar and new topics to meet academic demands in a variety of disciplines. Continue to learn to apply a range of higher level skills, similar to native speakers.

School Reminders Emergency Card updated current via Parent Portal
Report any change of address or phone number. Add your cell number and have a local emergency contact person. Residency Verification Immunization Parent Portal, CANVAS, and/or Naviance (HS only) Samira: Immunizations must be up to date. The school will notify you if there are any changes needing to be made or any upcoming immunizations they need record of. Your emergency card must be filled out accurately and updated whenever there is a change. Please keep this information current. Reporting any changes to your address or phone number. You may add cellphone numbers and have a local emergency contact person on this card as well. IUSD verifies residency annually. Please check the following link for more information.

School Communication Schedule a parent-teacher conference if you have concerns. You can contact the teacher directly by sending him/her a written note, ing, or by leaving a phone message. Grades 7-12: Counselors are available to help with academic advisement and social/emotional issues. Samira: The home school connection is very important in Irvine Unified. Please contact the teacher by making an appointment through or in the school office, writing a written note, or sending an . For conferences, plan ahead and request an appointment with the teacher in advance. Counselors are available for class placement and personal problems.

Health Nurses will screen for Hearing and Vision
Update your emergency card annually Medication: Students may NOT hold or take medicine of any kind at school. All medicines, prescription or Over-The- Counter MUST be held in the office with parent and doctor written advance notice. Samira: School nurses will screen for hearing and vision at various grade levels. It is the parent responsibility to follow up on a referral. Students may not hold or take medicine of any kind at school. All medicines, prescription or over the counter, must be held in the office. The nurse, or office staff, will give the medicine to the student only with advanced written notice from the parent and doctor. You can get the form for medicine at the school site office.

⚠ Safety Follow the drop-off and pick-up rules/signs.
Sign-in/sign-out if you drop your student off late or pick him/her up early. Supervision is only available minutes before or after school. Drive safely through the parking lot. Mental Health Awareness
Start with classroom teacher or school counselor Guidance Resources Irvine Family Resource Center Samira: The IUSD Mental Health and Wellness Department supports students’ social-emotional needs by providing collaborative site-based support, programs, initiatives, and education aimed at offering student-centered prevention and intervention mental health services, reducing stigma around mental health, and eliminating barriers to learning. The IUSD Mental Health and Wellness Department supports students Student’s mental wellness is as important as the academic success. If you are concerned about your child’s mental wellness, please discuss it with your teacher or school counselor for help. Here are other resources:

Zero Tolerance for Weapons and Drugs
Discipline Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Academic Honesty is important! Students must follow the standards of behavior Warnings → detention → suspension → expulsion Parents are notified of the above steps Zero Tolerance for Weapons and Drugs Samira: In IUSD we encourage Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS); for more information about PBIS please check the school website, or handbook. For middle and high schools please review the handbook provided by the school for policies and procedures. Students must follow the standards of behavior set by the school site. Parents are notified of any warnings, detentions, suspensions, and expulsions. We have a zero tolerance policy for weapons and drugs.

The three major events are Back to School night (in the fall), conferences (in the fall and spring), and Open House (in the spring). Of course it is encouraged to join the PTA and attend their monthly meetings and support by participating in school fundraisers.

IPEP Irvine Parent Education Programs
Timely Topics Meetings - general information meetings offered 4 times per year. Parent Workshops - cover education related topics in depth which are offered several times per month. Barbara: To help parents become familiar with the various topics relating to the education in the IUSD, the Language Development Programs offers Timely Topics seminars and the parent workshops throughout the year. You will receive an notice with more details about these meetings shortly. Some workshops include topics about Parent Portal and Canvas, graduation requirements, subject specific like how to help your child with reading, writing, science and math (Math Pathways), study skills, and educational technology use.
