Genocide: Systematic killing or elimination of an ethnic, culture, or religious group

2. Major Genocides A. Holocaust: During WWII; 1st time the term genocide was used. It was an attempt to kill all Jewish people. B. Rwanda: Occurred in 1994; 800,000 people killed in 100 days C. Darfur: Occuring now in Sudan (region is called Darfur)

3. Rwanda Genocide: A. Two groups fought:
Hutu: Largest ethnic group in Rwanda (84% of the population) Tutsi: Smaller ethnic group; majority of people that were killed during the genocide B. Their race is the same; the only difference is social and economical

Rwanda Cont C. In 1994, the Rwandan President, a Hutu was assassinated; Hutu extremists killed moderate Hutus and most of the Tutsis

Rwanda Cont D. The U.S. refused to provide aid:
France, China, and Russia opposed involvement; said it was an “internal affair”

4. Darfur Genocide Prior to 1900’s, Sudan is very strong; no problems with any fighting.

Darfur Cont B The British colonize (take over) Sudan, and a small group of people are appointed to lead the country. Very few resources (food, education, etc) are given to the people C. In 2003, rebel groups attack a government air force base to protest the neglect

Darfur Cont D. In response, the government launches and attack. They hire opposing groups (called Janjaweed) to kill the rebels; these groups kill all people, not just those fighting 400,000 people killed 2.1 million displaced
