3 Android phones

4 Android phones for mobile data collection
Android phones have been used in nutrition surveys in many countries Pros More accurate results Faster Easier to review, analyze, improved feedback from supervisors Cons Expensive and fragile technology

5 Features of the phone, your responsibilities
These phones are the property of UNHCR. When they are in the hands of the enumerator, they are under his personal responsibility Never leave the phone unwatched Never leave the phone on a desk or bed, keep it in your pocket or handbag Be careful! Enumerators will have to sign a waiver to acknowledge their responsibility over the phone

6 Phone ownership and responsibilities
This waiver must be signed once before the beginning of the survey, by each of the enumerators who will be in charge of the phones.

7 Phone ownership and responsibilities
Sondage de Sécurité alimentaire du Burkina Faso Inventaire des téléphones par équipe et par jour DATE: PreTest Xperia Barcode/IMEI G1 Barcode/IMEI Team leader Signature Team colour Team 1 red Team 2 yellow Team 3 pink Team 4 orange Team 5 blue Team 6 green Example of sheet that needs to be signed every morning by the team leaders and every night by the survey supervisor. Hence the team is responsible for the phones during the data collection period, but not overnight when the phones are with the survey manager.

8 Paper support

9 Household survey list Overview of all HH visited by a team
One per unit (cluster/block as convenient)

10 HH composition list For each HH, gives an overview of familiy members
One per HH

11 Standard workflow Write down the list of HH to visit for the day
Make sure to have a full understanding of the composition of the HH (HH composition list) Develop work habits We suggest to first focus on individual modules (child, woman) and then finish with other modules Use the HH survey list to write down any HH that needs to be revisited at a later time.

12 Let the household know you will be using a phone…
Something to consider is that this new technology may be intimidating. It is a good idea to let the person you are interviewing know what you are doing with this piece of equipment.

20 The ODK application

21 ODK Main menu This is the application where enumerators enter data.
Enumerators will mainly use the ‘Fill Blank Form’ button.

22 ODK Choosing the form After selecting ‘Fill blank form’, enumerators select any of the forms. Food Security WASH Mosquito Net Children (0-59 months) Women

23 ODK Browsing through the form
To go to the next question of the form you can either “swipe” the screen with the finger, or use the button at the bottom of the screen.

24 ODK Changing the language
To change the language of a questionnaire: once the form is opened, click on the Menu button (bottom right button of the phone) and choose “change language”

25 ODK Select an option This is an example of selecting one of the items on the form. When there is a circle (radio button), only one can be checked. Practice going to the next screen by swiping the finger, like you are turning the page from a book.

26 ODK Enter numbers/text
Example: This is an example of where an enumerator would fill out a form with text. The enumerator can use the key pad on the screen, or the phone key pad. For some fields, only letters can be used, and for other fields, only numbers can be used. Ranges can be set by managers.

27 ODK Add a group Example:
Add another group; if there are more than one woman or child in one household you can add them all one by one.

28 Record GPS coordinates (1)
Pull the top of the screen toward the bottom. It will bring up a different menu – one of the ICON will be for the GPS. Ensure that the GPS icon is ON (tap to turn on/off) May look slightly different on your phone

29 Record GPS coordinates (2)
Wait until a satisfactory accuracy achieved [10m suggested – adapt to context] Take the recording outside, not indoor. Start the GPS Test application once a day. Turn off GPS when not needed!

30 ODK End of the form When enumerators are at the end of the questionnaire and have finished all questionnaires in this household: Tick ‘Yes’ to the question “Interviewer: I confirm that questionnaire is complete” Tick ‘No’ to the question “Supervisor: I confirm that questionnaire is complete” (it will be filled by the supervisor later)

31 ODK Save Questionnaire
Do NOT tick “Mark form as finalized” Click on « Save Form and exit » Forms will be reviewed by supervisors every night

32 Forms name Name of empty form Name (auto-fill) Food Security FS_HH
WASH WASH_HH Mosquito Net Mosquito_HH Children (0-59 months) Child_HH Women Women_HH

33 ODK Review data Enumerators or supervisors can review saved data, by pressing the “Edit Saved Form” button in the main menu The questionnaires will appear in the same sequence as they were saved.

34 Some tips If you accidentally closed ODK: restart the application, most of the time it will open again where you left it. If the application crashes: turn the phone off and back on again. Restart the application and check if the data from the form you were editing have been saved. You should find it back in the “Edit Saved Form” menu If the screen goes black: the phone just went to sleep mode, press the On/Off button!

Otherwise, the phone management list is sufficient. Ensure that the household list is given to each team, as well as enough HH composition sheets. Phones settings should be checked before leaving (plane mode, wifi off, etc) Any absent household (or unfinished surveys) should be revisited first, then move on to new households as per survey list.
