1 What to do… Turn in your test corrections chart!
Open your notes to page 20. Answer the following prompt in your Think About It… Using your knowledge of science, identify 2 examples of physical properties

2 Properties of Matter Standard: Compare the particle arrangement and type of particle motion associated with different states of matter. 9.7 - Apply an equation to determine the density of an object based on its mass and volume.

3 Matter Matter- is anything that has mass and takes up space. Every object in the universe is made of some type of matter Volume-The amount of space taken up, or occupied by an object Liquid Volume- measured in Liters and milliliters.

4 Volume When determining liquid volume you must consider meniscus.
Meniscus is the curve at the surface of a liquid. To measure the volume of liquids, you must look at the bottom of the meniscus

5 To find the volume: volume=length x width x height v=lwh
Cubes or a rectangles use the following formula: volume=length x width x height v=lwh

6 To find the volume: Irregularly shaped solid objects, use a graduated cylinder. The volume of water displaced by the object is equal to its volume. 1 mL is equal to 1cm3 So, you can express the volume in cubic centimeters.

7 What do you think? T or F: 1mL is equal to 1cm3

8 What do you think? Matter is anything that has ______ and volume is anything that takes up ____________. a. Weight – mass b. Mass – space c. Space - mass

9 Can Matter Be Changed? Yes, in two ways, Physically Chemically

10 Physical Properties A quality that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical makeup of a substance.

11 Physical Properties Of Matter
Examples of physical properties are; density malleability ductility conductivity elasticity solubility hardness color luster odor taste texture melting point boiling point optical properties transparent translucent opaque

12 Physical Change Physical Changes: Changes in matter that do NOT change the individual chemical atoms or molecule. Characteristics of physical changes: The shape, size or state of matter changes. No new substances with new properties are formed. Reversal of the action that caused the change may restore the substance to its original form.

13 What do you think? 3. T or F: A physical change results in the rearrangement of atoms of a substance into a new product?

14 Density Density is the amount of matter in a given space or volume. (**concentration**) Or - mass per unit volume of a substance.

15 Units Of Density Describes the relationship between mass and volume.
Mass is measured in grams. Volume of solids is in cubic cm. (cm3) Volume of liquid is in milliliter (mL) 1 mL = 1 cm3 Density is given as - g/cm3 or g/mL

16 Using Density Density is a physical property
Density of a pure substance is ALWAYS THE SAME Therefore density can be used to identify different kinds of matter.

17 Measuring Density To find the density of a material you must find mass and volume. Then you calculate:

18 What do you think? Density is a physical property that establishes the relationship between? a. Matter & volume b. Mass & space c. Mass & volume

19 What do you think? The amount of matter in a given space or volume is? a. Physical property b. Density c. Ductility d. Luster

20 DO! Answer the following questions using the information from today’s lesson.
This is anything that has mass and volume. ____________ The amount of matter in an object. __________________ The amount of space an object takes up. ______________ The concentration of matter in an object ______________  _______________ properties are characteristics of a substance that can observed or measured without changing the substance? Name 3 physical properties of matter you can observe or measure. matter mass volume density physical Color, shape, texture, density, mass, malleability, odor, taste, buoyancy, luster…

21 DO! Calculate the densities of the following substances
What is the density of CO gas if g occupies a volume of 100 mL? A 10 cm3 sample of copper has a mass of 89.6 g. What is the density of copper? An irregularly shaped stone was lowered into a graduated cylinder holding a volume of water equal to 2 ml. The height of the water rose to 7 ml. If the mass of the stone was 25 g, what was its density? g/mL 8.96 g/cm3 5 g/cm3

22 Keys to Understanding Write at least 3 sentences
Summarize the notes in your OWN WORDS Explain the main ideas from the lesson
