6 Two Responses to the Resurrection
Nate Reed – South Regional Pastor Sunday, April 30th, 2017

7

8 I sought out to answer the question…
Was there a consistent theme in the disciple’s response to the resurrection in all four gospels?

9 Response #1 - Worship DEF: to express in attitude or gesture, one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure. (BDAG - προσκυνέω) “The response of all I am to the revelation of all He is.” –Daniel Henderson Exhibited in our actions, words, thoughts, state of being/attitude etc…

10 Response #1 - Worship The Expression of Reverence
Falling Prostrate Before the Lord Matt. 28:9 - “…And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.” John 20:17 – (to Mary) “…stop clinging to me…” Verbal Confession of Christ’s Deity John 20:28 - “…My Lord and My God.”

11 Response #1 - Worship The Expression of Obedience
Jesus: “Go tell the disciples!” (Matt. 28:10, Mark 16:7, Luke 24:10, John 20:24-25) Jesus: “Wait in Jerusalem!” Luke 24:29 - And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. Instructions on how to lead the church John 21: “Tend my lambs…, Shepherd my Sheep…, Tend my Sheep….”

12 Response #1 - Worship The Expression of Joy/Praise
Matthew 28:8 –  “And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. Mark 16:5 – “...they were amazed!” Luke 24:41 – “While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement.” John 20:20 – “And when he had said this, He showed them both his hands and his side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.”

13 At your tables, spend some time in worshipful prayer, proclaiming who Jesus is and what he’s done.
One-sentence prayers Prompt: “Lord Jesus, I recognize that you _________________"

14 CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY!
Luke 24: And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising God. CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY! Originally titled “Hymn for Easter Day” by Charles Wesley

15 Response #2 - Witness Jesus gives the disciples the command to “GO!”
First to encourage the other disciples… But then to take the reality of his resurrection to the nations. Matthew 28:19-20 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

16 Response #2 - Witness Mark 16: And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” Luke 24:46-48 – “ and He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things”

17 Response #2 - Witness John 20:21 – “So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’” Acts 1:8 – “…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” In light of the resurrection, how is your witness of “going”??

18 1 Corinthians 15:13-19 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

19 If Christ didn’t rise from the dead, then would your life be pitied by others?
Would your approach to your career be pitied? Would the state of your bank account be pitied? Would your relationships be pitied? Would your life choices be pitied? Would the way you spoke up for Jesus be pitied?

20 At your tables, discuss the following question…
Which area of your life do you feel would be least pitied by the world if the resurrection had not really happened?
