4 Protection Clothing insulates from the cold and keeps the sun from burning and dehydrating the body in the heat. Construction workers, firefighters, and police officers need special clothing for protection. Hospital workers wear gloves and facemasks to protect themselves from contamination.

5 Identification Clothing and accessories can identify people as members of a group. Uniforms can help us identify hotel staff, airline personnel, etc.

7 Modesty Modesty: reserved in the way one speaks, DRESSES, or behaves.
Various cultures have different standards or beliefs about acceptable ways to cover the body with clothes. What is considered modest can be different for men and women. Different time periods in history have varying degrees of modesty in clothing. Standards: ethics or customs that are regarded as acceptable (ex: Greek Orthodox Wedding dresses)

8 Status Clothing and accessories can show a person’s status or rank within a group. Members of the military or the captain of a team might wear insignias (a badge or emblem) to indicate rank or status. Clothes or accessories might be used as status symbols by ordinary people. An insignia is a badge or emblem that shows membership in a group. Status Symbol: Clothes or other items that offer a sense of status for the ordinary person.

9 Adornment Decorations, such as clothing, jewelry, and cosmetics, that are worn to enhance appearance and attract attention. Adornment is used in some cultures to bring admiration and recognition. Example: henna Cultural, religious, etc.

Everyone has likes and dislikes. Clothing likes and dislikes are determined by your values - your beliefs about what’s important, desirable, or worthwhile. That’s why clothing comes in many colors, fabrics, and styles. That’s why clothing comes in many colors, fabrics, and styles.

Your clothing philosophy is your overall attitude toward clothing. What do you look for in clothes? Comfort? Durability? Cost? Status? Trends? Comfort, durability, low cost, easy care, status, or trends? Those that value: Comfort: clothes that feel good. Durability: wears well over a long period of time. Low cost: sales and bargains. Preserve free time: clothing that takes little care. Status: select clothes and accessories that look or are expensive or have the name of a designer or celebrity. Trends: sacrifice comfort and practicality in order to wear up-to-date fashions.

18 Influence of Family Where the family lives and what they do impacts clothing choices. Families who live in northern climates need heavy coats, boots, etc. Families who enjoy outdoor activities need clothing for hiking, water sports, etc. Families that live in northern climates need heavy coats, boots, etc. for snowy winter days. 19 Influence of Friends A peer group consists of people with a similar background, social status, and age. Your peer group is your friends and classmates. An adult’s peers are friends and job associates. A peer group can have a big influence on how people dress and act. Social status: position or rank within a group.

20 Influence of Friends During the teen years, young people usually have a strong need to be accepted by peers. Acceptance hinges on wearing the “approved” style. The group may have a strong need to decide what clothing is “IN.” Acceptance hinges on wearing the “approved” style. Problems arise when the group’s idea of “right” conflicts with the individual’s or family’s beliefs.

22 Impact of the Media When you read a magazine article on the season’s latest fashion trends, you get ideas about what to buy and wear. Advertisements are used to promote products and persuade you to buy! If you buy certain jeans that you saw advertised you have been influenced by media. Advertising has the ability to persuade people to buy. Look for the facts instead of buying from the emotional appeal. Celebrities endorse products. Status Symbols: give the wearer a feeling of importance or wealth. alligator on LaCoste’s shirts swoosh on Nike sportswear

23 A Changing Society Society influences what people wear.
A group of individuals who live together in a particular area, often as a nation or community. 5 major trends as influences: More casual living Rapid communication via the Internet Multiple shopping options Consumer Power - price, quality, service, & least hassle Global marketplace – clothes made in other countries can be sold anywhere! More casual living: used to be more formal. People dressed up more to do everyday things. Many clothing rules existed. Rapid Communication: Technology has brought societies around the world in close contact. Fashion news transports quickly. INTERNET Consumer power: price, quality, service, and least hassle. Loyalty is less likely. Global Marketplace: clothes manufactured in other countries can be sold anywhere!

Step 1: State the Situation Clearly identify the problem or situation Step 2: List various Options What choices do you have? Step 3: Evaluate the Options What are the pros and cons of each option? Step 4: Consider your values What is most important to you? Step 5: Select the Best Option Step 6: Evaluate the Results Options: busy something new, sew a garment, wear something you already own, borrow something, etc. How much $ can you spend? Can you wait for a sale? Do you have the skills to sew a new garment? Will you look presentable without something new? Would a borrowed garment fit well and look good? Consider money, time, practicality, appearance, and creativity.
