1 Anoushka Shankar By: Lucie Stanton MUS226

2 Early Years Anoushka Shankar is the daughter of renowned sitar player Ravi Shankar. Born in India but spent most of her youth traveling between London and North America which could account her her taste for so many different musical genres. Her father began teacher her to play the sitar at the age of nine. She was playing prestigious venues by the age of thirteen.

3 Influences Anoushka is heavily influenced by flamenco, electronica, jazz, and western classical music. Her father Ravi was of course a huge influence for her and he urged her to explore all types of music. She has worked with artists around the world in order to create the perfect blend of different genres. Some of which include Sting and her half sister Nora Jones.

4 Accomplishment One of the leading artists and composers in world music today Anoushka Shankar has made a name for herself around the world. She was the first female recipient of the House of Common Shield in 1999 She has also been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards making her the first Indian female nominated in the world music category. She was also the first Indian Woman to perform at the Grammys.

5 Keeping with tradition
In her music there is a lot of emphasis on older styles as well as newer genres while still using Indian classical music as the basis for her works. Blending new age and western music with these styles is not an easy task but Anoushka has proven herself to the world that she is capable of doing so.

6 Beyond the music Not only is she know for her musical creation but also as an actress and writer. She is a regular columnist for multiple news papers and has written a book dedicated to her father.

7 Where she is now Now living in London with her family Anoushka continues to work on music and write. She continues to bring Indian classical music to younger generation around the world.
