Feelgood Vergennes Middle School January 24th, 2008

2 Feel What?!? International Organization of passionate students dedicated to working for a sustainable end to world hunger UVM Feelgood is 1 of 16 international chapters We raise money and awareness by selling gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches two times a week. Every week! $50,000 raised by UVM Feelgood alone

3 $800 a week? Where does that money go?
The Hunger Project Empowerment Gender Equality Partnership 14 countries India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Bolivia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique… Grassroots?

4 So what does the money do?
Epicenter The Epicenter helps a community of 10,000 become self-sufficient in 5 years An epicenter costs $8 per person per year for 5 years At a rate of $4, two sandwiches ends one person’s hunger for life.

5 Why The Hunger Project?

6 Empowerment They don’t “teach people to fish”
They do not give out food Chronic hunger – 92% Famine – 8% The biggest resources the world has are the hungry people themselves. We are also empowered.

7 Gender Equality Traditionally women are treated as insignificant or second class citizens, yet they are responsible for the majority of the world’s food production, household labor and the well being of the community. 121 million children are out of school… the majority are girls. Play video (cycle of malnutrition) Women are the key change agents in ending poverty

8 Partnership Partnership acknowledges that 2/3 of the world's population living in impoverished countries are not asking for charity. They are vibrant, talented and competent. This is a true partnership. What does a world free from hunger look like?

9 College Students Ending WORLD Hunger???
Trillions of dollars wasted on aid based charity. But we know what works! The Empowerment Model! The end to hunger is possible- we need to open up the world’s eyes to this possibility Not only are we raising money by providing something everyone needs (lunch!), but with each sandwich comes the message of empowerment, gender equality, and partnership. Everyone is involved

10 It’s up to us…. It is our generation’s responsibility
We have the knowledge, resources, and the voice “I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities, on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity.” -Bill Gates
