7 Women, children and labor…
By 1890, one million women worked in American factories Women worked in textile mills, tobacco factories and the garment industry Many of these women were recent immigrants to the United States They received low pay and no benefits like sick leave or vacation time CHILDREN 2 million children under the age of 15 worked throughout the country by 1900 Children worked in crowed, dirty textile mills, coal mines and sweatshops They worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week There was no time for school or an education

9 Homework: Draw a Multi Flow Thinking Map to describe the causes and effects of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company tragedy. You must use both words and pictures in your map.

1) Think about each photograph by Lewis W. Hine of a child (or children) laboring at different types of work. 2) Write your observations on the chart provided. 3) Pair up with one teammate and share what you wrote. 4) Once you have examined all six photos, write one sentence that summarizes your overall impression of child labor at the turn of the century.
