1 Baseband Platforms - Architecture
Nokia Open Day 2017 Software Architecture BTS System Architecture Advanced BBP Architecture

2 What is baseband? Baseband Layer 3 Layer 2 Layer 1
Radio Frontend Downlink Core Network / Internet Mobility, handover etc. Multi-connectivity, cyphering, scheduling etc, Modulation and coding, precoding D/A conversion etc. Up-conversion. Uplink Modulation and coding, precoding A/D conversion etc. Down-conversion. Power / synchronization / security / diagnostics / configuration / … Networking / processing / memory infrastructure Note that this illustration is highly simplified

3 Who are we? What do we do? Input: Output: Customer requests
Baseband Platform (BBP) Architecture is resposible for creating concepts and solutions for Nokia’s future base station (BTS) products. We are at the front of new product creation, defining goals and coordinating efforts of multiple other teams. Input: Customer requests Technology development Corporate / product strategy Standardization Disruptive concepts from Nokia Bell Labs Base station (BTS) architecture specification Algorithms / System engineering Software architecture BTS System architecture Technology development Output: Novel technology concepts, improved product solutions System architecture and algorithm specification Technology prototypes

4 Base Station Architecture

5 What is BTS system architecture?
BTS is not a standalone device. It is part of a telecom system. It also has rich internal structure. Purpose of the BTS System Architecture is to manage the BTS design sutch that it deliveres the external and internal functions with respect to the defined requirements and network concepts. Nokia BTS Uplink Downlink L3 L2 L1 RF Encoder Modulator Decoder Demodulator DFE Tx DAC RF Tx DFE Rx ADC RF Rx RRC NAS MAC RLC PDCP IP Power / synchronization / security / diagnostics / configuration / … Networking / processing / memory infrastructure What we do: Design end-to-end architecture Define product concepts Create models and specifications (e.g. UML, SysML) Promote architecture concepts cross organizations

6 Drivers for next generation of BTS products (new target architecture)
Cloud processing L3 L2 L1 RF Bandwidth x5-100 Massive MIMO Capacity x10 DFE Tx DAC RF Tx DFE Rx ADC RF Rx Downlink IP Radio latency x0,1 Encoder Modulator DFE Tx DAC RF Tx NAS RRC PDCP RLC MAC Uplink Decoder Demodulator DFE Rx ADC RF Rx IP Non-Real Time Real Time RF Time

7 Technology development
New generation of products = New concepts anf features New requirements New technologies New or modified product concepts: Hardware proof-of-concept Component/technology/product benchmarking Development/verification of design tools What we do: Technology scouting (SoCs, processors, interfaces, …) Design of evaluation platforms (hardware design) Prototype implementations (FPGA, embedded SW) Collaborate with external vendors
