Presentation on theme: "3 types of volcanoes and a feature on a volcano"— Presentation transcript:

3 types of volcanoes and a feature on a volcano
Please go to pg. 23L in your journal and use a ruler to create a 4 quadrant grid.

You will start in the upper left quadrant and move in a clockwise direction. I will give you a few clues that relate to a type of volcano/feature on a volcano. Please write them down in the quadrant we are currently working in. Then discuss with your group to determine the volcano/feature being presented to you. You can also use 23R as a resource to determine what type of volcano/feature I am speaking about.

After your group has decided on the type of volcano/feature please hold up the card in the middle of your table with your group’s decision. We will then decide as class what the correct volcano/feature that was presented.

After confirmation of the volcano/feature has been made we will use one of the four post it’s (listen for the color that will be used for the particular quadrant we will be working in) to represent the volcano/feature. Please choose one of the food items given to you (chocolate chip, Hershey kiss, M&M, or vanilla wafer). Discuss with your group which food item you believe represents the type of volcano/feature. Once we confirm as a class we will set it up as follows: POST IT Write the name of the food item-here Draw and color the food item-here Write the name of the type of volcano/feature-here

Explosive eruptions Steep upper slopes and smaller lower slopes Sides concave upward Diameter across the volcano is between 1-10 km

This is a Composite-Strato volcano

Steep pointed, cone shaped (conical) with straight sides Explosive eruptions Diameter across the volcano is small; less than 300m high

This is a Cinder Cone Volcano

Formed by viscous magma
During eruptions lava piles up around the vent and forms craters

This is a Lava Dome

Shaped like a shield Quiet eruptions Gentle slopes that convex upward Large diameter across

This is a Shield Volcano
