Introduction to 1 Peter 5 Mark 14 = Peter’s failure to suffer for Jesus. 1 Peter 4 = Peter’s on how to successfully suffer for Jesus. John 21 = Jesus gives Peter the chance to undo his boasting, denials, and failure to suffer for Jesus. John 21 = Jesus calls Peter to shepherd Jesus’ sheep. 1 Peter 5 = Peter calls pastors to shepherd Jesus’ sheep under Jesus.

Introduction to John 21 John 1:1-18 = Prologue (teaching that Jesus is God before the story of John the Baptist starts) John 1:19-51 = Introduction (the transition of disciples from John the Baptist to Jesus’ ministry) John 20:1-31 = Conclusion (after the resurrection the disciples finally believe that Jesus is God) John 21:1-25 = Epilogue (tying up loose ends in the story after the theological issues are settled)

John 1:1-5 (NIV84) Prologue 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 20:26-31 (NIV84) Conclusion
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 21:1-6 (NIV84) Fishing and Feeding
1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias [the Sea of Galilee]. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

John 21:7-14 (NIV84) Fishing and Feeding
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples [as a group] after he was raised from the dead.

Fishing Luke 5:1-11 = John 21:1-14 – They’re at the same place Jesus called Peter, James, and John as disciples after a miraculous catch of fish (these miracles are only recoded in Luke and John) 1st time the nets broke and Peter told Jesus to go away because of his sin. 2nd time the nets hold and Peter runs to Jesus for forgiveness of his sin. John 21:3 = Were the disciples giving up on fishing for men and going back to fishing for fish? Luke 5:10-11 = The disciples left everything and followed Jesus to become fishers of men. Mark 14:28 = Mark 16:7 = Jesus told His disciples before and after His resurrection that He’d meet them in Galilee after dying and rising again. Acts 18:3 = Making Tents = Keeping a job to care for your family while you do ministry. John 21:9, 13 & John 21:10-11 = Jesus invited the disciples to bring some of their fish even though Jesus already had fish cooking.

Feeding John 21:5 = “Children, have you any food?” (NKJV)
Luke 24:41 = The disciples fed Jesus. John 21:12 = Jesus fed His disciples breakfast, like a parent feeding His children. John 21:1 = John 6:1 – They’re at the same place where Jesus fed the 5,000 with fish and bread John 21:13 = Did Jesus do a miracle with fish on the fire or just in the lake? John 6:11 = Plural fishes and loaves of bread fed 5,000. John 21:9, 13 = Singular fish and loaf of bread fed 7. Jesus fed the 5,000 and the 4,000 right before Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ (Mark 8). After Jesus fed the 5,000 He told His disciples that He was the bread from heaven they had to eat by believing in Him to have eternal life (John 6).

John 21:15-17 (NIV84) Feeding/Fixing
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love [phileo] me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love [phileo] me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love [phileo] you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
11
Peter’s Un-denial Jesus changed His question slightly each time:
Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me more than these? Simon son of John, do you truly love [agape] me? Simon son of John, do you love [phileo] me? Peter only changed his answer slightly the last time: Yes, Lord, you know that I love [phileo] you. You know all things, Lord, you know that I love [phileo] you.

The 2 Loves: Greek has four different words for love; two are used here. Agape = a stronger word for unconditional love. Phileo = a weaker word for brotherly love/affection/kindness (Hendrickson & Kistemaker). Spanish has two words for love, used in Spanish Bible translations of John 21. Amar = a stronger word for love (Te amo). Querar = a weaker word for love (Te queiro). English has the words “love” and “like”, but “like” isn’t strong enough to count as a synonym for “love” that could be used to translate Peter’s word for love here. 2 Peter 1:5b-7 (NIV84) 5 …add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness [philadelphia]; and to brotherly kindness [philadelphia]; love [agape].

Jesus’ Questions and Peter’s Answers Revisited
Q1: What are the “these” in Jesus’ 1st question about if Peter loves Him more than these? 1st question: Do you really love me more than these [other disciples] love me? 1st answer: You know how much affection I have for you. Q2: Jesus changes the question by dropping the “more than these” clause. 2nd question: Do you really love me [in general]? 2nd answer: You know how much affection I have for you. Q3: Jesus changes the question by dropping the word “truly” and changes to Peter’s word for love. 3rd question: Do you have affection for me? 3rd answer: You know how much affection I have for you.

Feeding Jesus responds to Peter’s answer with parallel instructions each time: Feed my lambs. Take care of my sheep. Feed my sheep. John 10 = Psalm 23 - Jesus called Himself the Shepherd, but in the OT God was the Shepherd. Jesus calling Himself the Shepherd was a claim to be God (Pastor Dan). 1 Peter 5:1-4 – Jesus is the Chief Shepherd, Pastors are under-shepherds who are called to take care of Jesus’ sheep. (We’ll focus on this more next week). 1 Peter 2:2-3 (NIV84) 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
15
John 21:18-25 (NIV84) Fixing 18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
16
John 13:31-38 (NIV84) 31 When [Judas] was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” 36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
