8 Flammable Low GWP Refrigerants
Multi-disciplinary Task Group (MTG) Low GWP is sponsoring 3 research projects aimed toward safety: 1806-RP  Flammable Refrigerants Post-ignition Simulation of Severity and Risk Assessment Update ($800k) 1807-RP  Compile Existing Guidelines for Flammable Refrigerants Handling, etc.  ($80k) 1808-RP  Assessment of Field-made Mechanical Joints for Safe Use With Flammable Refrigerants  ($120k) The MTG will communicate their findings to Standards and Codes bodies once the research is complete. $800k AHRI has sponsored a number of risk assessments to evaluate the probability of ignition events occurring as a result of refrigerant leaks. $80k As reported in January, ASHRAE has embarked on research to ensure that new, flammable refrigerants are used safely. We also need to understand the potential severity of such events.  Changes to standards and codes are needed to permit wider safe application of flammable refrigerants. A multi-disciplinary task group (MTG) has been formed to sponsor this work. Once research is done, the MTG will ensure communication of research results within ASHRAE and to standards and code bodies outside of ASHRAE. $120k
