The Yeoman The Man of Law The Squire And the, The Manciple.

Thomas Becket in Canterbury) How many pilgrims were there?(20) Name 5?(the summoner, the wife of bath, the squire, the clerk and the man of law How did Chaucer arrange the order of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales?(relations) Write down part of the list (5 pilgrims).(knight, squire, yeoman, prioress, nun)

The manciple. The Manciple is a person of which who gathers & provides the main food/supplies for institutes such as schools or monasteries. He specifically works for a inn of the court, of which usually contains lawyers living together. This Manciple is somewhat suspicious for being dishonest with matters involving financial transactions & withdrawals, of which the other pilgrims learn and come to realise. The first one of the other pilgrims to learn this is the host, which pushes his suspiciousness more by feeding him rumours about the cook trying to find fault inside his accounting, which he deals with by getting the already drunk cook further intoxicated. In summary the Manciple is one of deception towards his leaders as well as petty trickery aimed towards those ranked below him all for his personal gain, of which usually has money or something of value to himself. His actions are making out to be that unethical actions will result in financial gain, which is also out of reach for anyone of noble stature, such as the Knight, for they are supposed to be impeccably moral.

The Yeoman: Knights normally only travel with only one servant and that is the Yeoman. The yeoman was a great hunter, he was appareled in a green hunting coat and hood (nearly looking like robin hood) he carries peacock arrows. Chaucer tells us he's a forester – at home he probably takes care of the forests on the Knight's land, protecting them from outlaws and making sure nobody poaches in them. As foresters go, he's probably a good one, a conclusion we can draw because he keeps his bow and arrows in very good condition – no droopy feathers for him – so it's likely he keeps his forest in similarly good shape. The Yeoman is normally in the presence of the knight when we see/ read about him. canons-yeomans-prologue-and-tale

The Squire. The Squire is the Knight's son, who joins him on this pilgrimage. He has straggly blonde hair and is blue eyed. According to the book, Squire is very good at what he does as, he is skilled in horsemanship, jousting, sketching, dancing, song and verse writing, and he carves the meat for the Knight well at dinner. Squire back then was the son everyone would want.

The Man of law. The man of law is a sort of old-day lawyer, and a favoured one. He is known to be appointed many times by the king to be a judge at trials, because of this, he became quite wealthy and began climb the social ladder. Owning land was a surefire way of catapulting your descendants into the nobility and since the nobility already seem to like this guy (appointing him to high positions in the court system) his chances of becoming one of them soon seem even more assured. He is said to be wise yet slightly suspicious of everything. prologue/page_8.html
