1 Key Stage 1 Music and RE!

2 The two songs I will be using for my lesson ideas are:
Music from Taize Music from Taize is renown for being relaxing and good for meditation. Taize is a Christian community set up in France by one man in the 1940’s ( “I’m Gunna Jump up and down” This song is written by Doug Horley, and is often used in children’s worship at Sunday Schools and holiday clubs. It has a catchy tune and has a lot of actions.

3 Music from Taize – Lesson 1
Starter: Each children are to be given a blank piece of paper and a variety of coloured pens, paints and paper. The teacher will play the music and the children are to use the pens to draw how the music makes them feel. Main: The children are to then lie down for five minutes and listen to the music with their eyes closed, when the music is stopped each child has to write down on the class ‘working wall’ one emotion it made them feel. The children are then to discuss in groups what you think this music is trying to convey – is it happy/sad? What do the words mean? – Discuss on table groups, then discuss ideas as a class. Plenary: Children are to each be given a piece of card in a triangle shape. On one side they have to write a sentence about how the music made them feel. The cards will then all be strung together like bunting and children can see how music makes people feel different emotions.

4 “I’m Gunna Jump Up and Down!” – Lesson 2
Starter: The classroom will be re-arranged so that there is a space for all the children to sit in in a circle. Firstly, the song will be played and the children will be asked to dance to show how the song makes them feel (make sure you discuss rules for dancing before playing the song!) Main: The children are to make a joint ‘word-wall’, where they each contribute a word as to how this music makes them feel. Discuss as a class ‘what is this music saying?’ ‘Do you like/dislike this music – why?’ Create a table showing children’s opinions about whether they prefer this song or the Taize song. Plenary: Children are to write down on the other side of their piece of bunting a sentence about how the music made them feel. The cards will then all be strung together like bunting and children can see how music makes people feel different emotions.

5 Lesson 3 – Summing up Learning
Starter: Children are to find their pieces of bunting from the last two lessons and share their thoughts with their talk partners – did you feel the same/differently about the songs? Why do you agree/disagree? Can you explain what you liked/disliked? Main: Children are to make a song and a dance as a class – split into three groups – one to dance, one to play instruments and one to write a song and sing it (TA support needed). The class song is to reflect what the children have been learning in RE over the term, about how songs make them feel. Plenary: The children are to perform the song and dance, and it will be recorded and played during the next collective worship assembly as the children are entering the hall.
