1 Problem Solving With Fractions & Decimals
Grade 6: Topic 6 Problem Solving With Fractions & Decimals Key Vocabulary: Product Quotient Reciprocal Equivalent Form

2 OBJECTIVE: Be able to solve real-world problems involving fractions and decimals by choosing and applying the appropriate operation(s) by looking for keywords or drawing a representation of the problem. Be able to justify your solution using estimation, inverse operations, or reasoning about a number-line or model.

3 WARM UP Instruction: How many decimal places do we need to move before we can divide? 1) ÷ ) 12.5 ÷ .05 3) 5380 ÷ ) ÷ .0007

4 REVIEW Give back quizzes: Misconceptions with reciprocal method
Dividing Fractions & Decimals Give back quizzes: Misconceptions with reciprocal method All terms must be in fraction or improper fraction form! “Keep” 1st number “Change” division to multiplication “Flip” only the 2nd number to its reciprocal. Multiply normally Misconceptions with Decimals Not aligning decimal properly Not checking solution by using inverse operation

5 EXPLORE Solving Word Problems: Read the problem carefully!
What do you need to determine? What details are provided? Can you draw a picture or make a model? Look for keywords to indicate one or more operations. Can you estimate the solution? Make a plan to solve the problem: Write a math expression Draw a representation or use materials to construct the solution. (area model, number line, ruler, cubes) Execute your plan Justify your solution – Does your answer make sense?

6 Explain: Brainstorm Keywords:
Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division

7 Formative Mr. Brown has $6000 that he wants to split among his 7 children. How much money would each child get? Round your answer to the nearest cent. What operation? _________________ Write the math expression: ________________________

8 Formative Mary ran 15.3 kilometers on Tuesday and 18.9 kilometers on Friday. How much farther did she run on Friday than Tuesday? What operation? _________________ Write the math expression: ________________________

9 Formative Jamie is making toy cars out of wood. Each car will be 4 ½ inches long. Jamie has a board that is 48 inches long. How many complete cars can be cut from the board? What operation? _________________ Write the math expression: ________________________

10 PRACTICE Quiz Retakes – after reviewing mistakes
(small groups – clarification & retake quiz) All Work to be completed in NOTEBOOK or on worksheet(s). Agile Mind Topic 6 PRACTICE Worksheet: Problem Solving with Rectangles & Triangles Agile Mind Topic 6 CHALLENGE Practice – next level for enrichment
