5 What are your goals today?
On a piece of paper write down 1 thing you are hoping to learn today Make a paper airplane with the paper. Tis is not part of the power point but rather a handout. They can then throw the airplane at someone in the room and everyone picks up a paper air plane and read out a goal. developing PARTNERSHIPS ● building CAPACITY ● supporting STUDENTS ● implementing TECHNOLOGY

6 Goals for the Day 1. Learn about the many modes of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC). 2. Become familiar with some of the basic features of the AAC systems that SET BC has available: both software and hardware. 3. Gain some hands on experience and understand feature matching to help make decisions on which Speech Generating Devices (SGD) to trial and request for students. 4. Learn the different ways to borrow/trial AAC systems for students. developing PARTNERSHIPS ● building CAPACITY ● supporting STUDENTS ● implementing TECHNOLOGY

7 Who are you? Level of comfort with AAC and with participating in a group (1-10) 1 = Please don’t look at me, direct eye contact is bad 2-3 = Look at me, but I am not going to say anything 3-6 = I know stuff, but you need to mine for info (like diamonds) 6-8 = Man I want to tell you what I know, I fly doing this 8-9 =This is like breathing effortless 9-10 = Sit down, I need to talk

9 Agenda: developing PARTNERSHIPS ● building CAPACITY ● supporting STUDENTS ● implementing TECHNOLOGY

10 Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?
No Tech Low Tech High Tech Augmentative Alternative Communication -Add to or alternative form of communication -Includes all form of communication (modes) other than speech -facial expressions, body gestures, tone of voice, objects, pictures, technology Assistive technology are objects that are often engineer created, things or tools that allow people access their environment: wheelchair, mouse, pen. Augmentative Alternative Communication (Augmentative (to add to) alternative (another form of) communication)- children that are partly verbal needs augmentative communication children that are non -verbal needs alternative communication. it is a form of communication other than speech. how we use body, voice, pictures, objects, gestures and technology. developing PARTNERSHIPS ● building CAPACITY ● supporting STUDENTS ● implementing TECHNOLOGY

11 Assistive Technology (AT)?
-Any object or system designed for the purpose of increasing or maintaining capabilities of people with disabilities. Assistive technology are objects that are often engineer created, things or tools that allow people access their environment: wheelchair, mouse, pen.

12 Core vs Fringe Vocabulary
Core Vocabulary Most commonly words that can be used in all environments with all topics and makes up 80% of the words we use Fringe Vocabulary Category or topic based words that occur infrequently and consists of mostly nouns. They make up 20% of the words we use Verbal permission given by Caroline Musselwhite The most important thing to consider in choosing the right equipment in trialing for our students is called- Feature Matching. Essentially we need to know our students. I cannot emphasize this more. We need to take into consideration their learning needs. What is it that we want them to achieve at school, keep in mind the IEP goals ( we need to think about academic goals, social goals, their current fine motor skills or any other health conditions, such as sensory, vision or hearing issues) We need to take a look what worked in the past and what didn’t and why? After, we do a thorough student profiling then we consider software and hardware features that will best support the academic, social, emotional goals of our students. We need to think which software matches our students learning goals but finding the appropriate hardware that can support it meeting the access options. For examples, iPads are a popular choice for most teams, however some software that does not have built in Switch Access or environmental controls which makes using the iPad a nightmare, for switch kids, if the software is not switch friendly. In those cases we need to look at other Hardware operating system that has swtich accessibility and also built in environmental controls.

16 Video Support “How to start”

17 The importance of using a combo of no/low/high tech AAC systems
-Get into groups of 2 and talk about situations and reasons why you would need to maintain a no/low tech system after a student has started using a high tech system. Carla

18 Cont’d Why use no/low tech? Some of our answers:
 - 1. Using one AAC system at the detriment of the child (Canadian regulations). One method is not Normative. 2. While learning/trialing new system: need to maintain a previously used AAC system to maintain level of communication (esp. if developing operational competency) 3. Use as a back up system if new system breaks down 4. In infective situations (hospital/ bathroom), in nature (swimming/camping/ rain), waking at night/ battery dead… Carla One method is not normative – ACTIVTY TIME Choose one method – gestures, pictures, objects or technology – not verbal (you can choose if you want – but only speech sounds eg apraxic sounds), and have a conversation about what you did on the weekend, and what are you doing this week? Time for 5 mins (normally 3 mins, laughing, 4 mins quiet) - How frustrated were you (cognitively average with strong speech skills) (sad, mad, frdutated) Is not typical to only have one mode of AAC to communicate.

19 Video: Use of no/low tech options
SET-BC also supports no/low tech options Picture communication AAC vs Sign vs Speech Object based communication in the home Carla

20 Low Tech Communication Systems
Big Macks (with levels, step by step) Cheaptalk (2, 4, 8) Switches Carla 1. Highest motivators eg bubbles, dancing 2. Core vocabulary – more and all done 3. social conversations/socials circles or controlling the environment eg time to sit for circle, teacher wants us to be quiet shhh shh, 4. core/fringe for circle time – for any predictable daily routine developing PARTNERSHIPS ● building CAPACITY ● supporting STUDENTS ● implementing TECHNOLOGY

21 Discussion Question:  Do you think that a prerequisite to using/trialing a high tech system is use of another AAC mode? Stacey No problem with going straight to high tech, but you absolutely NEED to be developing multimodal forms of AAC. Psychological detriment Tech breaks.

22 Feature Comparison Chart
Computer hardware: physical parts of a computer system. computer case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, disk drive, motherboard, video card,   is what you can physically touch. Wikipedia Sep 4, 2014 Software: generic term for…computer data and instructions broken into two major categories: system software…application software  accomplish specific tasks. Carla

30 What AAC system should be trialed and chosen
What AAC system should be trialed and chosen? Considerations: Feature Matching Consider Student profile: Communication/language and cognitive level and goals, Student academic level and goals Literacy level and goals Gross and fine motor skills/current access method Vision/hearing/sensory issues Current communication system Consider AAC device features: System software Features: appropriate communication page sets and keyboards, ability to modify how things are presented to suit issues with access and vision, access to curriculum and leisure activities and software, option for environmental control and leisure programming. What is software System Hardware features : can the system handle all the software needs, how portable does it need to be, do the available sizes meet visual and other needs, availability of access options, environmental controls and other options The most important thing to consider in choosing the right equipment in trialing for our students is called- Feature Matching.
