2 Why Grow Veggies in Containers?
It’s a good way to start out – start small and work up The crops are moveable Can be moved to catch the sun or out of the frost Can go with you if you move Good if you are renting & can’t have a garden If your soil is no good A great project for kids Why Grow Veggies in Containers? Should be deep – 20cm plus Should be strong enough to hold the growing medium Must have drainage holes (or be self watering) Examples – pots, wood, metal or polystyrene boxes, recycled food tins, garbage bins, buckets etc. The Containers Sustainable Living in the Suburbs Eating the Suburbs - Session 3

Must retain moisture while being well drained and be fertile Rich, friable garden soil is a good base but add coarse sand and compost Or use good quality potting mix Or make your own with sand, compost/worm castings and cocopeat 1:2:3 To keep the fertility up apply liquid manure every week or two. CABBAGE - Earliball ; Sugar Loaf ; Golden Acre CAPSICUM/CHILLI - Most varieties can be grown in containers & are non- hybrid. CARROT - Baby carrots are most suitable eg. Baby Pak , Baby , Amsterdam Forcing or Thumbelina. CUCUMBER - Bush varieties eg. Spacemaster EGG PLANT - Most varieties eg. Short Tom or Long Purple. LETTUCE - Cos eg Romaine or Cos Green; butter Head eg Buttercrunch or Green Mignonette ONION - Any spring onion ( shallot ) variety. PUMPKIN - Bush pumpkin eg Golden Nugget or Bush Butternut. RADISH - All varieties are OK. SILVERBEET - Fordhook Giant SUMMER SQUASH - Bush varieties such as Early White Bush or Marrow TOMATOES - Small bush varieties eg Tiny Tim or Small Fry and "Egg" Tomatoes eg Roma. ASIAN VEGETABLES - Many of these also lend themselves to container gardening for example Pak Choi; Chinese Mustard; Mizuna; Mibuna and Chinese Broccoli.
