I can list and explain some of the issues people need to consider before getting married. I can state the legal requirements for marriage in my state. I can analyze a situation to determine if a couple has met the legal requirements for a valid marriage.

5 Questions to consider before getting married…
Do you really want to get married? Will the marriage be conducted by a civil union or religious union? Will there be a prenuptial agreement (or is one necessary)? Will either of you change your surname? Whose last name will children carry? How will housework and bills be handled? How will the estate be divided in the event of death? Do you reside in a community property state?

6 Legal Requirements for Marriage in Kentucky
A union of two people Whom are of a man and a woman (KRS & KRS ) Neither can currently be married to a different living person. Neither of whom are under the age of sixteen (or if either is over 16 but under 18 but does not have the consent of a legal guardian.) Not related any closer than second cousins (either by whole or half-blood) Consensual and without fraud

7 Situational Analysis Jane and John are in love. John is 18 years-old and Jane is 17 years-old. John asked Jane at their High School Prom. Separation Divorce Still financially responsible for each other Separation Agreement Once signed by both husband and wife it is a legally enforceable contract. May be made part of the divorce decree. Things to consider before getting a divorce: Cost Children Is the marriage irreparable?

12 Before you go… Should a couple remain married if they believe the marriage is irreparable, but they have children? Why or why not?

14 Definitions Joint property
Separate property – purchased before the marriage; or during if one spouse earned it, paid for it, is given it, or has title to it. Community property states – all property acquired during the marriage belongs equally to the husband and wife. Arizona, California Idaho, Louisiana Nevada, New Mexico Texas, Washington Wisconsin Irreparable - (of an injury or loss) impossible to rectify or repair.
